My roomie has a router upstairs and I got my desktop set up downstairs. Ever since I got this desktop I have just been using this little netgear stick that always stays in one of the USB ports but I recently got into online gaming and whatnot and wanted to know if there was a better choice to cut down lag/disconnects?

    -thanks =)

I believe you can get relay boxes that you place between the router and the pc - just google it and find out about the technology you are using. One thing though. If you are using netgear it would pay to look through their products first. The only reason being theyre a good and relieable company and its always a good idea to keep the equipment to one or two manufacturers

oh okay I'll try and stick with netgear then. I thought I heard I would get a stronger signal if I didn't use the USB port but I don't know. It's a gateway router too not a netgear one. It goes from the cable, to the cable surfboard, to the routher.

your USB netgear is fine for gaming. are there any other wireless networks in your area? that can cause disruption.

one thing to try is logging into your router's (not cable modem) homepage and changing the wireless signal. first try the lowest ch.1, then highest ch11, then find somewhere even in the middle. whatever gives the best signal. other things like framebursting mode and other options maybe available that might boost signal.

i think a 'relay' might be more commonly known as a 'wireless bridge'. if you get one, try to stick with the same brand as your wifi router $$. another purchase option is to buy an antennae, or make one if your good with mathematics.

if it was linux then you could use the command iwconfig and set the TX settings manually. but never mind. lets us know what you do.

Yeah, my signal strength is fine, it's just on higher end games like Castle Wolfenstein it lags pretty bad but for WOW it plays pretty decent but still hiccups.

I used to play wolfenstein and it lags no matter how good your computer equipment is. the admins sometimes do it if theyre pissed off with losing they make the two sides unequal by lagging one team or the other. Obviously thats not the only reason it lags

Personally I dont like wifi stuff just because you cant tell what the problem is sometimes whereas you can test a cable and replace it you cant so easily make a signal better sometimes.
but a great trick is to note what happens when you put your microwave oven on in the kithen (I swear on my life this is true) When you operate a microwave oven this has an effect on the frequencies you use for wifi and the connection MAY get noticeably degraded - depends where you are in relation to it. Will try to find a link that explains it.

Heres one of the articles and it mentions time lags and a drop of between 25 and 99% depending on circumstances whenever a microwave oven is on.

I think gamers are better off on wired connections to be honest. I never liked wireless

heres a google page full of links about ovens and wifi
