I just got to see John Cameron Mitchell's new release shortbus in NYC. It was entirely different than Hedwig in the regard that it is not a rock musical. It predominantly is a movie about dating, relationships, sexual discovery and self discovery / acceptance. While I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Hedwig, it was a quality movie and JCM deserves lots of credit. The main plot is about a sex therapist who has only had one sexual partner, her husband of 7+ years, and has never had an orgasm. The therapist exposes her problem to a couple she is counseling and next winds up in an underground swingers club searching for answers. WARNING: for those who are uptight / narrow minded the movie is extremely sexually explicit and most is not hetero.......
yeah shortbus opened about 1 month ago and as far as I know its only playing in 2 theaters in NYC. Definately a solid second offering from John Cameron Mitchell. But I will warn again, its not a rock musical and doesn't lend well to comparisons with Hedwig. If you will only be happy with another Hedwig, it will leave you wanting. Hedwig is much more of a cult classic. Shortbus is ground breaking as far as "the limits" a movie has been taken to sexually.......It makes a poignant statement too. The theme is that "Everybody of every sex and sexual orientation wants the same thing: to be loved and accepted.
Ohhh I really want to see Shortbus...it looks incredible. It doesn't bother me at all that there's no "other Hedwig"...there could never actually be one anyway.
So, just saw this movie tonight. It was amazing, it was beautiful and it made me really really really horny! I reccommend it to anyone and everyone! (Over the age of 16 of course, haha).
