The urban dictionary says this: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hippy Dictionary.com says: hip‧py1 /ˈhɪpi/ –adjective, -pi‧er, -pi‧est. having big hips. hip‧pie /ˈhɪpi/ –noun a person, esp. of the late 1960s, who rejected established institutions and values and sought spontaneity, direct personal relations expressing love, and expanded consciousness, often expressed externally in the wearing of casual, folksy clothing and of beads, headbands, used garments, etc. Also, hippy. Compare flower child. hip·pie also hip·py n. pl. hip·pies A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles. I hate being associated with the words "opposes" and "rejects"... We don't actively or vehemantly hate what we see, but choose to find something better.. No mention of that in those descriptions...
"a little green man eating a peyote button came up to me and told ma a hippie was a Happy Intelligent Person Pursuing Infinant Enlightenment but he coudnt spell it...." quote from my old buddy little hawk
Your words somehow comforted me, as I thought about how I could turn the power and energy of my thoughts and words into being " for" something, instead of "against" something else. The dictionary did make it seem like there was an inevitable fight in store for anyone with alternative views, but, really, we should be able to build our visions into reality with mindful determination to create good in the world, and "choose to find something better" Right on.!!!!!!
I too have problems with the definitions. As an adjective, for example, it supposedly only means having big hips. I refer to my being as living the hippie lifestyle. Some of the definition attempts to make a composite of some of the life back then and there. I knew many hippies who were far from spontaneous. I for one enjoy having plans well in advance. My clothing is eclectic. I incorporate established institutions into my life; I buy records and listen to music played on machinery. I own a television. I make some food from scratch and have a small garden, but I certainly do shopping at the market. I like to think that I advocate liberal attitudes about human welfare, but I also draw the line in many instances. For example, I don't support a lazy-ass lifestyle if the person is able-bodied and simply chooses not to work. I prefer to think of myself as a person who doesn't exploit the human condition.
