why parents are doing such a shitty job these days, is pretty simple: their techniques are outdated
parents once had much more control on their children's knowledge
the average children didn't know (much) about sex, about drugs, or what-not until parents let them
now with censors slowly fading, and the internet
parents have lost that control, and are not too likely to be gaining it back

the modern day parent should not be intent on keeping their children ignorant to the world, as their conventional counterparts have been
but instead, you should teach your children how to interpret and use theiir knowledge

I would try and prepare my children for the real world earlier, so that they are't totally blindsided. Of course, I don't mean, sex ed straight out of 2nd grade, but still....kids today are growing up faster.

I wish a parent (or preferably grandparent) would come in and post their opinion

    Sorry.........

Parents sometimes hate to take full responsibility for their child. In a way, it's got to be frustrating because there isn't much you can do when it comes to the people that their child or children will be influenced by. I think it just depends on what kind of values you teach your child. Everyone has their own opinions on how to raise a child. It's not even the matter of having sex or doing drugs, it's just the matter of being responsible while doing so....But chhaaaa right,,, like thats going to happen.....that's the last thing I ever thought of when I was crawling around outside drunk burrying things...

Speaking as a parent (harumph) I definitely would say that owing to childrens' rights and all sorts of other changes we parents have lost the ability to control our children as many of us were controlled when small.

In some ways I think this is a step forward in that the newer generation are maybe more sure of themselves and their place in this world than we may have been, also will not be so easily walked over or used.

The flip side of that is of course we may be raising a generation of cynics who are all very hard.

I try to raise my 13 y/old with a realistic view of the world, but still want her to value people and things and herself. I am by no means a perfect parent, but I do try to make her aware that there are many dimensions to any given thing, and that everyone has something positive to contribute...

Not sure if this really answers the q.

I am trying to raise her to fit in a modern world, perhaps with old fashioned values.. how's that?

well, i've got my hands full with my two children. you can't control every aspect of their lives and personalities. they're going to see, hear and do things that you will have to help them process after the fact. i'm not a believer in keeping your children hidden from everything. you can't, and it wouldn't do them any good anyway. but hell, i'm only at the beginning of the gauntlet with my 4.5 yo, and 1 yo. one thing i do know is that my eldest doesn't get away with being mean, ever. but that still doesn't stop her from being mean sometimes. that's just kids.

The only thing I'm sure of if I ever become a parent: I don't know everything, and everyday I have a chance to learn something new. Therefore, raising a child with "This is how we're going to do this." attitude is a grave mistake.

Parenting is too complex and involved a job for me to be able to comment on until I've actually been one. Way to easy to be critical of something I have little understanding of.

i thought i had a pretty good grasp on parenting because i helped raise my little brother, sister and niece. however, having a couple of your very own in your house and up your butt 24/7 is an entirely different sort of experience. you really learn to let go of perfection.
