Hmm, I guess confidence, practicing a lot, and getting used to doing things infront of people.

It was strange for me because after my first gig, I was so excited about it all that my stage fright was over from then on and I just try to have fun on stage now. But it helps a lot to have practiced a lot so everyone knows their shit, hehe.

But if you mess up or something, don't sweat it, just try to hop back in when you can and keep going. I've been getting into singing lately and I've had my first mess up where, first, the mic wasn't turned on and I didn't notice until I started singing, haha. Then, later in the song, when I was grabbing the mic, the cord accidentally came out, so I had to put that back on quick and keep on going, then someone messed up in the song and played a certain part early, which kind of screwed me up, but the band quickly bounced back into the song where it's suppost to be, and we ended it. It really sucks when things like that happen, but that's life in performance, best thing to do is just to learn to bounce right back up from it.

Anyway, good luck on your singing.

A trick i picked up was to single just two people out of the crowd...and to take turns singing at each one...you begin to focus , and soon forget about the rest of the crowd.

Agree with comments posted so far - another thing is to remember you HAVE got a good voice, that other people have appreciated before, and to realise you WILL be appreciated and not judged!

Good luck and keep us posted!

My motto for performing in front of an audience: Hell with the audience. If ya can get your voice to sound just the way you want to hear it, and you are really into listening to yourself sing, you can pick up that mike and get so into what you are doing that you don't even care any more...
I tend to be a little "introverted" normally, but put me on stage with a mike and I turn into a monster. Not because I'm trying to show off, but just because I get into it that much. Doesn't matter who's watching. And when you are into what you are doing that much, it makes you sound better...

I used to have that problem. Experience will take care of it, I promise! Until then, have you tried looking at the tops of people's heads, or at their foreheads? That way you aren't actually looking AT them, just TOWARD them! Or, if you wanna get really zen about it, imagine you are performing in the middle of a wheat field where there is no audience. It's amazing how much more confidence visualization can give you.

Maybe you should pretend you've suddenly become someone else while singing.

Do some ohm-ing before, always lower you can. Ohh half your breath, mmm the rest. First feel in chest, second feel around nasal cavity.

Just go for it when its time and anyways you wont really see the crowd unless no good lighting. Even then just relax and dont be tense.

umm... I used to have really bad stage fright... but once you realize that the people are there to see you and not make fun of you, you'll be alright. Seriously do you go to any shows thinking "dude I'm gonna wait for someone to mess up"? no so it takes some getting used to but stage fright is silly :]

The first time I played on stage I was so nervous my knees were shaking so bad I could hardly stand up. The best way to deal with nerves is to know your material so well you don't even have to think about it. A certain amount of nerves can be good. I think of it as energy coming from the crowd. Experience teaches you how to ride it. If you can learn to give that energy back to them then you've got it made in the shade.

    Just do it!
If you don't get over it, then you obviously weren't supposed to be up there in the first place.

Just tune yourself in with the passion you have for singing.
While i's nice to have an audience LOVE what your doing, it really won't even matter until you love it.

So go out on stage like your n your bedroom alone, and just do what you love. If you love it, then they will love it too. I promis.

just go out there and try to sing the best you've ever sang. i have a similar problem but on guitar, and all you gotta do is just internalize that fear and nervousness and turn it into motivation and confidence. it's SO much easier than you think if you just BELIEVE in yourself! whether you're good or not at what you do, it's the fact that you're DOING it that already sets you apart from your peers! think about it man, you had to CONQUER A FEAR just to get to where you are now! and it's just the first step! think of what a better person you'll be when you get to where you want to end up! You can do it bud, you just gotta have faith in yourself and take that deep breath to prepare for the plunge
