C'est vrai, mes amis, nous sommes maintenant un pays nous-memes, mais seulment en nom. Québec est encore une partie du Canada. Nous n'ont pas séparé... En tout cas, c'est tres cool, n'est pas?

And for the non-Frenchies out there:
We're now officially called a nation, but we're essentially just called that. We're still part of Canada. The Bloc put forward a movement stating that we should become our own nation, and Harper accepted, except he added the words "under Canada". Needless to say, the Bloc are pissed off, so are most of the seperatists.
Anyways, I think it's kinda fun.

    I think it is great.

    A nation within a nation.

Too bad they did not do it when England still had hold of Canada.

Then they would have been known as the nation within a nation within a nation.

But then again... the the Quebec First Nationers now live in a nation within a nation within a nation.

Now, the separatists can separate themselves from the nation with a nation and form their own nation within a nation within a nation.

If they had any Muslims within them.... they could have the nation of Islam within the nation of separatists from the nation of Quebec within the nation of Canada. Now, I do not know if they have any First Nationers who might be Muslim. We might just be able to get it up one more to a nation within a nation within a nation within a nation within the Nation of Canada.

When people ask where they are from... what will they say?

    I bet....... Quebec?

This is a touchy subject and I hope it stays friendly - after all we are know as the friendly Nation. And I live in Nanoose which once was the Aboriginal word for friendly

From a financial point of view – I have always hoped Quebec would not separate from Canada. And for now that’s all I will say but will watch this topic.

I've heard Kay bec, kwee bec, ka bec, how do Quebec(ers?) pronounce it?
I'm also curious as to what's up with this, sounds like something been brewing for a while.
    Thanks from an ignorant American.

Psh, I'm assuming Harper just did it to piss off the Bloc. Anyways, I have an excuse to spout nationalistic gibberish, so I'm happy... God bless the sovereign republic of the united Quebecs! ;)

    Canada isn't a nation, its a state. I'd be hard-pressed to even call it a nation-state.

It doesn't really change anything. Gilles Duceppe and André Boisclair are just mad now because they'll have to stop whining about that . And the Liberal Party won't fight too much about the ''nation'' concept at their leadership convention.

It kinda annoys me that we fight and argue so much about that, i mean aren't there more important to work on. It doesn't really change anything to the federalist that i am but i don't see why sovereignist should see as a gain ..

And a province isn't a nation. Quebec is a province and multicultural.

French-Canadians are a nation, but are spread out throughout Canada.

If we are celebrating, then what excatly are we celebrating. I know that Quebec is considered its own nation under Canada but what does it mean for Quebecers?

It means it gives the Bloc a springboard to start whinging that because they're Nation and we've sort of recognized this now, that they should have self-rule regardless of an 'Under Canada' or not. Harper thinks that this 'Nation' thing means that the separatists got the recognition they want and will shut up now, but I can't believe he's really that naive.

The whole thing kinda miffs me because it takes so much attention away from dire issues that the whole country is facing all over a rich province that wants more and niggling about semantics. If they want to learn about cultural repression and distinct society and funding needs the separatists should all go live on a Rez for awhile.

We ARE a nation. Weither the rest of canada recognizes it or not is irrelevant, generally speaking. Quebecers know, we realise, we feel it. It's undeniable. We are a distinct society. Canadian provinces all blend together, Quebec manages to be part of canada, without blending in colorlessly. WE ARE A NATION. I love my country, but i FUCKING LOVE my province. I am a PROUD Quebecer, NOT a canadian.

Vive le Quebec! Vive le Quebec LIBRE!

Remember the Rino's ? They once promised if elected, they would use the rocky mountains to build two sloping bicycle paths, one going east, one going west. Then you could coast from coast to coast through your nation within a nation within however many nesting nation dolls we end up with.

Harper did it to be viewed as more favourable to Quebecers.

It was a strategic political move, for one.

He's hoping to take more seats from the Bloc and the Liberals eventually.

He needs to gain more popularity in Quebec and if you hadn't noticed in the last election, he spend a lot of time there. He needs Quebec on his side to govern.
