Is it just me? I'm using the net so i dont think it's that i'm a techniphobe. I'm not afraid of terrorism, world war, nukes, fascism. What i'm afraid of is: GPS units in ALL new cell phones and automobiles closed circuit security systems in public schools rfid chips national id cards nano technology genetic engineering prescription mood stabilizers ai biometeric scanners artificial limbs and organs vat grown limbs and organs anything remotely considered "post-human" satellites(the ones powerful enough to see a hair on your zit) consumer cards(save 3 cents on purchases by allowing them to track EVERYTHING YOU BUY!) micro recording devices (audio and video) industrial robotic arms replacing manufacturing jobs. autovoices replacing customer service jobs The future i see: picture the matrix minus conscious human thought. scary shit...
I would pray for Peak[oil, metal, coal] if only a) i was the praying type and b) Peak didn't mean death for billions.
I'm kind of the same, except I have this weird fear of most man-made materials. I'm terrified of the chemicals entering my body. I've always been this way, except it got way worse when I came back from living up north in the woods this summer. The city air smells so vile, I can't imagine all the toxins I'm taking in... but it's extreme. Even out where it's less cityfied I'm afraid to breath near paved roads because of the nasty, unnatural smell of the pavement. I should mention I have very sensitive smelling (hearing too, but that's beside the point). The thing is, I grew up far out in the country, drinking fairly dirty well water and stuff, and therefor developed an excellent immune system*. I'm extremely careful about what I put into my body and so on... and don't get me started on sanitary sprays! They can that "the smell of freshness" or whatever, but I can just feel the chemicals imbedding in my lungs and making me sick. The smell of freshness is the musk of damp fields and the smell of forests and the sharpness of plains, etc. But back on topic, yeah. Artificial additions/ modifications to the human body is one of the scariest concepts out there, to me. I just want to get back to the woods where I can be happy and healthy again. *edit: about the dirty well water thing, it's very true that in nature there're tons of germs and infections to be had, and people who've grown up in the city and have weak immune systems will easily succumb to them, but through getting used to them, your body is so much more able to defend itself against them, but not against the toxins and carcinogens in the city. They just poison you and give you cancer.
