Of course, the royals don't have egos. At least with politicians they can be chucked out by voters. But I wouldn't replace the royals at all - there's actually nothing to replace as they do nothing meaningful anyway. They are purely a symbol, and a symbol of something not very nice...

Not replace them, so you want our prime minister to be the all powerful ruler of the state, have you thought through what that actualy means ?
The PM and govt are now actually 'all powerful'. The Queen has no power whatsoever in practice even to slow down whatever the govt want to do. Perhaps you should think it through yourself...it's simply a waste of time and money to have these parasites whose role is purely bullshit ceremony derived from the feudal age, when 'all powerful' meant 'all powerful'. The thing is archaic nonsense which makes celebrities out of non-entities and little else, other than as I say, costing us millions every year.
I think replacing them would be important, it is a good idea to have a symbolic head of state which removes national identity from party politics. Criticising the president of the USA politically in time of national crisis is seen as being unpatriotic - a very dangerous state of affairs. It's also important that the head of state has no political power and is purely ceremonial. What's problematic about the royal family is that they have an immense amount of privelege which is entirely undeserved. We should replace them with a person everyone likes, someone who has done their life's work, and is not politically devisive. Bruce Forsyth?
The government may appear to be all powerful and the royal family purely symbolic, but that is not the reality, the system is supported by the whole establishment and is not at the beck and call of a transitional party political leader. I agree with lithium a seperate head is necessary, but as he shows us a caring compassionate figure is not easy to find, I see the accident of birth as still the best option. Give the money to the poor I know, sang the same songs myself, I've just come to see the amounts involved as a bit petty really, just look at the filth of the city.

It's not just the palaces and the taxpayers' money - not a small issue - it's also what they represent, which is everything we should be against in a fair, free and equal society.
Always something the older generation should watch out for agreed. I concur but until this society looks like it might appear I see it as a rather small issue and one that can be dealt with easily enough at the right time, in the meantime no other model offers any real improvements, just opportunities for vengeful actions, not always a good idea.
