i was just wondering who everyone likes the most out there. i am really into fantasy books and am always looking for more great authors. i gotta say my favorite author would have to be terry brooks his books all kick ass. and please if you put tolkien down put down someone else too.
i love fantasy books, horror books, and military/army/spy/surveillance/action books (i.e. the legend himself Tom Clancy). favourite author is either stephen king or tom clancy, favourite book is either Rainbow Six or The Tommyknockers
At the moment my favourite would be the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb. Try The Myth-ing Omnibus(i think, could be myth=ing) by Robert Asprin if you like terry brooks.
Of course, there's the basics: Tolkein, Heinlein, Douglas Adams, etc. You might check out the Earth's Children series by Jean Auel, I just finished re-reading them and they're pretty good. (My only complaint is that she repeats herself too damn much) Kinda a pre-historic-science-fiction-fantasy world.) The next series I will be reading is the Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind. I haven't read much from this genre since I was about 15, but my brother rants and raves all the time about how much he loves the books, and I figure an 11 book series, (9 are published, 10th is coming out soon) will keep me occupied for some time.
The Dark Tower series by Steven King is absolutley fantastic, 7 books with twist at every page. I absolutly loved it, i cant belive its finished now
I remember when I was younger I loved Tamora Pierce, and all her series'. Also one of my favorite books is Bedlam Boyz by Ellen Guan, or Guam. Still holdovers from younger years
I know I sound like a broken record.. but K LeGuin - Earthsea Trilogy Donaldson - Thomas Covenant Chronicles Michael Scott Rohan - Winter of the World Trilogy That I have multiple copies of these books says it all . Oh.. n I guess Jordan's Wheel Of Time though it is a little too long and rambling!
If akhc hadn't suggested it, I would have put the Earthsea Trilogy also. LeGuin did some fabulous stuff, including Left Hand of Darkness, her most awarded work, but it's more sci-fi. Others I'd suggest... both Roger Zelazny's Amber and Dilvish series David Eddings Belgariad (Pawn of Prophecy, etc) Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern (I can't believe no one beat me to them) Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality Raymond Feist's Riftwar series Robert Heinlein's Glory Road (his only "high fantasy" novel as I recall) and if you like fluffy humorous fantasy, I love both Edith Freisner's Majyk and Harpy High series, and deCamp/Pratt's Incomplete Enchanter stories. There are plenty more, but that should keep you busy for a bit.
Now most of these will be a repeat of what was already said, but you’ll have that. J.R.R. Tolkien—Lord of the Rings (This is a given and I’m sure you’ve read it) Ursula K. LeGuin—The Earthsea Trilogy (I would have to agree with <akhc> and <Foxes Den> on this one.) Anne McCaffrey—The Dragons of Pern (I’m glad <Foxes Den mentioned it I was starting to think I was the only one who like it) R.A. Salvatore—The Legend of Drizzt (Includes…. 1. The Dark Elf Trilogy 2. The Icewind Dale Trilogy 3. Legacy of the Drow)
Court Duel is a fantasy book, a traditional love story and a war story in one. Still good tho. Obviously the Harry Potter series, they're pretty catching. Now this isn't really fantasy, but some of my fav. books are: The Kiterunner--very moving, fav. book for bout 1 1/2 years now Dogs of Babel--a slower book, but very riviting Straydog-- a sad story about a dog Uglies/Pretties/Specials-- an interesting plot line with a twisted love story Pride and Prejudice-- a golden book i'd reccomend to anyone Airborn/Skybreaker-- Kenneth Oppel is a great writer, I reccomend you read these. Thats about all my tired brain can come up with...
A fairly recent discovery of mine, I'm on the second book (of five) at the moment. Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series is on my list of things to read, though it has grown somewhat beyond a trilogy.
Even though I have read ALOT of R.A.Salvatore's books,My alltime favourite author is Piers Anthony. Xanth is my favoureite place to be. Terry Goodkinds first few books in Sword of truth serie was good too. Piers is the shit. :sunglasse
Of course Tolkien. I also agree with Terry Brooks. That being said: Ursula Le Guin: wizards, magic, some dragons Anne McCaffrey :dragonriders Christopher Paolini: dragonriders again, but completely different. Also, elves and magic Charles DeLint for modern urban fantasy plus fairies and whatnot Naomi Novik if you like oddness, but good oddness. She does dragons as well Gregory Maguire for twists on fairy tales and other previous literature Rebecca Reisert for a wonderful twist on Shakespeare Anne Rice if you like vampires, she also did books on witches, although not really the conventional kind Alice Borchardt, Anne Rice's sister, for shapeshifters and the like Edgar Allen Poe as one of the oldies but goodies Shakespeare in some instances for another Books intended for younger readers, but which I still read because they are still good: J.K. Rowling wizards and magic Tamora Pierce, as peaceband chick said she covered many kinds of magic Holly Black for more modern urban fantasy fairies and so forth Amelia Atwater-Rhodes more vampires and some shapeshifting
