Superman is a Christ figure, the only son of Jor-El sent to earth to save humanity. Christianity has permeated Hollywood since 9/11. I wanted Superman to be fighting the War on Terror. Bin Laden would have made a more formidable enemy than Lex Luthor. George Bush could have had a role. A 3 hundred million dollar price tag demands relevance. Superman Returns is reminiscent of the first film. Brandon Routh looks like, acts and sounds like Christopher Reeve. The refinement is that Superman and Lois Lane have a son. If I were superstitious, I would imagine a curse on the Superman character. The old television Superman committed suicide, and Reeve was paralyzed and died young. 100 GREATEST MOVIES http://jimcolyer.com/papers/entry?id=28
That sounds like a good idea, as far as the war on terror, but I don't think America's ready for that yet. I think that we needed something comforting. Like superman giving Lex Luthor a beating. Never gets old, as far as I'm concerned. Routh...well...He did a good job. He's no Christopher Reeve, but he did a good job. Can't wait to see him do more work.
Jim Colyer, Before the movie was released there was a lot of talk about how superman was depicted in the movie as being somewhat gay, but the only instance I could even remotely Identify was when he was falling to earth (as If in his male lovers arms) Hotwater
Thats ridiculous, unless he was kissing and making love to guys hes not gay I wouldnt care if he runs around in a dress or is obsessed with fashion, though i dont think thats what superman is like that would be weird haha. Besides does it really matter if a superhero is gay? They relate more as gay characters if you think about it, they have two identities kind of like alot of gay people who may have a "straight identity" at work and a "gay identity" with friends.
Lanze, I was just quoting articles I read in Time and in Newsweek magazine. who were they quoting ? well I surmise it may have been the Christian Right Like I said I really couldn't find instances of superman appearing gay, and the one example I gave is a bit of a stretch. Hotwater
Lex Luthor's sexuality was a bit ambiguous, but then so is Kevin Spacey's, init? Nothing gay about Supes though, i think that was just the newspapers desperate for stories once again. As for the film.. NOTHING HAPPENED...!! How did it take 2 and a half hours to get through?? It was all good, the acting, the special effects, the characterisation, but there was virtually no plot! Disappointing, after the breathtaking Aeroplane/Shuttle crash scene.
I thought the best part was the Airplane/Shuttle crash scene that ended up in a baseball game. That was great.
A HUGE part of the $300 million cost of the film was the literal dozen attempts at making another Superman film after The Quest For Peace. They tried to resurrect the franchise, pretty much after the original Batman with Michael Keaton.
i didnt think much of it to be honest. the airplane part and the bit when he's running through the field and does that huge jump were the best for me.
Ironic isnt it? Anyway, i thought the movie was pretty much great until the ending. I dont know about you guys, but then endings that rub me the wrong way are the ones where someone is down, then some crazy emotional crap happens that would almost never happen in real life, they get some crazy emotional "i can do this boost" and its almost as if the bad guy gives up.
Superman Returns was a very good movie too. I liked how Lex luthor was played by Kevin Spacey, he really did a great job. I was looking around myspace and saw Lex has a myspace at myspace.com/lexluthorreturns, it looks pretty cool and has some neat stuff.
Yeah I loved this movie when I saw it in theaters - cant wait to pick it up on DVD finally. Theres some pretty sweet stuff on that myspace page too ccrider - thanks for the extra info.
I got the 14 disk box set off of dailyplanet.com. It was Soooooo worth the loot man. I am still going through all the disks! mad extras. i mean so much to seee. I highly recommend getting not only superman returns dvd, but the BOX SET! peace solid breaks
The reason i will not say this movie was complete shit: -John Williams theme -Marlon Brandos voice over -Kevin Spacey But other than that, i thought it was pretty weak, it did a good job of making superman the american hero, and the parallels to jesus christ were sometimes overbearing, and it definatly couldve done without superboy. after watching it, my friend turned to me and said 'this was so much better then batman begins' i smacked him in the face.
LOL. Yeah I agree, if it wasn't for Kevin Spacey I probably wouldn't have liked it at all. I saw it in the theatres and thought the movie kinda dragged. My dad recently rented it on dvd and I didnt even bother watching it again, didn't feel like it. Isn't a bad movie, just wasn't that great either. Batman Begins was so much better.
I cry whenever I see Batman Begins, I love that movie so much, 5 times in theatres, which isnt that much compared to those LOTR fans, but still. But I'm not so sure about Nolans call on casting Heath Ledger as the joker, I hope he knows what hes doing...
same here..i don't actually like the ending of this film though some special effects of this film is great but when it comes to plot, i still preferred the older version of superman compared with this new one..
Eh I was dissapointed by this movie. I'm a mega Superman fan but they screwed up all the characters. Is it so hard to have a story like the comics with Lex Luthor, Clark Kent, Lois, etc? Sigh
After reading other people's posts, I made a wise decision not to see the Superman movie. I wish these directors would stop messing with the original story and stick to the original point. Plus I'm tired of the religion and the anti war tie-ins with these superhero movies. That's not why we got into them in the first place. I get geeked out when it comes to seeing these movies. I liked the Christopher Reeve versions. BTW I found this video clip about how we are about superheroes. Check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmWbBqiCxGc
