If you brought a girl up as a boy, and a boy up as a girl, would the girl think like boys do or like girls do? (ditto for the boy)?

as hippies, we don't control the environment of our kids but allow them to freely explore creative possibilities

To an extent... a lot of "gender" is based on how kids are brought up... girls being told to play with dolls, boys being told to play with trucks, etc.- It even starts from when people are babies.... the tone of voice that babies are talked to changes based on whether the baby is a boy or girl (softer and "cuter" to the girl)....

    Nature vs. Nurture.

You're always going to see cases that support both sides.

I think it all depends on the kid...some kids conform to what they were shown or forced to do...while others don't and go with their "nature" instinct...

Some psychologist did this.... the child was born hermaphrodite, identified as one gender (course they didn't know then), the psych recommended one set of the genitals be removed and the kid raised as the other and, yeah, the kid was pretty fucked up for a while.

I forget the name of who did it though... saw a special on A&E I think, or else TLC.

everyone is "brought up" (i.e. 'enculturated' as much as socialized and taught the probabilities of social consiquences) as much, if not more, by their peers as by authority figures such as parrents or parrent surrogates, and as gender roll perception is a matter of enculturation ...

i'm not so sure you could raise a physical male or female to function as their (complete) social opposite. for one thing, they still have to use the bathroom at school, and in many if not most places, are required to participate in at least on p.e. class. it would really depend on how you went about it too. with gentle and tolerant guidance you might end up with a bi and or gay, at least tollerant, off spring. demand too heavy handedly and they might instead grow up hating both genders and having a lot of other psychological problems as well.

none of which makes gender rolls indemic to physical morphology, but rather, is a consiquence of the very strong influence of cultural ambience upon them.

I think the boy or girl would think the same as they would have before you interfered.

They would be really screwed up emotionally, however.

The program that you are referring to was a special focusing on intersex individuals. It was on TLC. The program dealt with people being raised in accordance to exterior genitalia, operations preformed on children so that they confirmed to some arbitrary societal standard.

I must get ready for work. However, when I return home, I will run a search and post the link if no one beats me to it.
