I once said to someone that it would be great if aliens from another planet landed so they could tell us about their technology. He said that he didnt see why they should be able to give us that information - since the majority of astronauts might know how to use a computer but would not be able to describe in detail the innermost workings of a intel pentium chip
and from just examining one it would not be that obvious how it worked - so even though they might bring techno with them - they might not know much more than how to operate it or replace broken parts
so it wouldnt be that useful to have them landing here for the reason of sharing technology

Do you think thats true? I mean if you landed on another planet and had to describe the mobile phone to the inhabitants and how it worked could you give them enough details so they could make their own mobile phone systems if they hadnt already got them? for example?

For all we know, alien species could be primitive, or in the form of mindless organisms like jellyfish who have no heart or brain.
We humans have always fantasized aliens to be more advanced than us. We are forgetting that the universe maybe old but in other universes they could be quite young.

What we would look for in a planet would be traces of life, water is the sign of life. It is what us humans need to survive. without water, we would surely shrivel up like a prune and die. As for possibility of advanced civilisation, I believe they would not be so friendly. They would be arragant and would be completely wrapped in technology and their planet would be the poisoned and polluted planet that seems familiar to our own and which faces the same global warming scenarios.

As we look to new exciting planets, I hope we meet life outside of our own solar system and that on the good side of an advanced species, we humans may actually learn a great deal more about how we can look after our planet and make peace possible.

I saw a film once where an alien comes to earth and he tells all the world leaders that he wants a conference with them but says that they must decide whether to call war or peace on the planet. He tells them he knows theyll make the right choice or he will destroy the planet. So the nations get together and form world peace so he destroys the planet.
Turns out we were supposed to make war and war and war as they setup the earth as an experiment to create the most warlike aggressive soldiers in the galaxy - but we were wimps so he torched the planet

Science fiction films always betray aliens as some kind of evil being with the possible exceptions, ET.

I believe also that if we met another civilisation, we would be very afraid naturally and amazed. It would be the biggest thing that would feature on the news. I am sure that they would be more peaceful aliens but like most beings, they would have potential to be as we are. Have emotions so they can turn nasty but as nasty as humans can get. They are pretty much like humans except they are different in that they have evolved according to their planet.

Aliens might not have emotions as we understand them though - I mean for example a dog may display emotions to other dogs we wouldnt understand.

If I landed on another planet I think I'd be having a nervous breakdown or something... I like it right here, thanks.

I think Aliens is just a fictional concept. There are no other civilisations out there. We are all a-l-o-n-e

At first it sounded like you were describing The Day The Earth Stood Still but nevermind.

I've always fantasized about what life might like be like on other planets. It's interesting to me :)

even if we met a alien, how would we even communicate with them, let alone describe and trade technologies? i mean, if they are from another solar system, they are on a completly different line of evolution. Chances are they won't even look intelligent to us. They may not even be 3 dimensional. Maybe they exsist in the 7th dimension, so we can only see bits and peices of them. how can we even classify something as being intelligent? What looks like mold to us may have a complex social order making it's own "technology." should that be intelligent? any aliens out there are so radically different from us that communication is almost bound to be impossiable. we have enough trouble communicating with our own species here on earth. drop an american in the middle of tokyo, and things aren't going to run so smoothly. how can we communicate with something that has none of our 5 senses? what if they communicate by air particlates and sending out vibrations? and how will any technology they have be of any use to us?

Well they should certainly expect a warm reception (9,932 F)

Eventually they will be sending manned missions to the sun (but not to the surface) in actuality they'll be constructing a Dyson Circle around the Sun (a variation of the Dyson Sphere) to supply the earth with an unlimited supply of energy.
