While, don't get me wrong, I love hippies as much as the next guy. The truth is my lifestyle just doesn't typically agree with theirs. Not into mary jane, shrooms, etc... Is there anybody else on here interested in a more conservative (but non-religious) self-sufficient community? If so I'd like to talk. Drop me a message here or email me at atavist05 at yahoo.com
not all hippies were potheads or on mushrooms or acid ..........and yes there are lots that were into non religious communes.....it was about doing your own thing ..yes there were drugs but some prefered booze and some were almost teetotalers ..myself included
Almost all the groups that i've looked into have a no drug policy for legal and political reasons. weather or not they follow it strictly is another question. The other thing I ask is you define a hippy, or your view of one. What is a typical hippy lifestyle?
I guess when I think hippy it is pretty stereotypcial. Politically and sexually liberal. Typically anti-government, anti-military with sort of a "damn the man" attitude, if you know what I mean. There's a lot more to it than that though whole underlying attitude (not meant negatively). I know a lot of self proclaimed hippies and while they are all friendly and we get a long great I wouldn't really want to live with them... they of course call me a conservative workaholic, but that's beside the point.
have a look at the kibbutz. i've often thought about this sort of commune based on sane/ stable values, it doesn't appeal - welcome to the world. spent some time in the kibbutz to realise yes its possible.
i almost think i would nowadays look for the "hippie" commune over any other,,,, least they dont seem so into meth n other shit like many others sects of society,,,, stonedouttrippinhippies,,,, skinnyminnymeanmethheads... hmmmmmm all this commune stuff,,, i am soooo glad we aint one,,, they just seem like lots of work...
hi atavist--i have land in santa cruz, thought about opening up my land to others. i guess i am half hippy, half yuppie, can't help it, it was the generation i was born in. think i have or have tried to incorporate the best of both worlds in my lifestype. anyway, i bought 6 plus acres in santa cruz, ca. the problem is i cannot give anyone a free ride. the land has taxes to pay on it and expenses associated with it. and it takes money to live. money i feel it is fair they i derive from eventual rents, which would be low for the area, dervied from the land. i would require anyone interested to work 15 hours a week, basically that would be doing things like helping to build the first house, and getting the gravel put on the roads. then they would be free to attend to their own needs, like work or building a small cabin of their own, or putting in a yurt or digging their own compost toilet. i can do no more. i think each "family" unit should have its own private space, this is important i feel. but you would be surprised, of the people i talked to, they basically all wanted a free ride, they didn't really "get" the opportunity i was giving them. in santa cruz county you can't buy a place to even put an rv on for under about $250,000, just for raw, questionably buildable, land. since then i have been offered over a million dollars for my land and am thinking of selling it because i am so disappointed with people and their inability to give as well as take. anyone care to share their thoughts on this. also, i spent some time at zendik farm and was about to re-write my will to leave it to them when i died, but due to the departure from the farm from the "oldtimers" i somewhat knew, like chen, nez and bugzy, i decided against that. unfortuantely i will just have to leave my land to the state and hope they manage it well and always keep it a place for musicians and artists. but who knows. all the negative i have heard on the web, which i unfortunately beleive is based in truth, has saddened me greatly. people get tired of being used and they become the thing they loathe the most, users. sorry if i am ranting, but my rants are based on experience and more expereince and tons of thought thereafter. namaste..j.c.
You know the kibbutz acutally don't look to bad, they seem to have a good sense of order. Only problem is I'm not jewish and don't really care to associate with any religion. Dreambient, I definetly sympathize with your plight. Yours is the same problem I have been trying to figure out for several years now. Unfortunately I haven't figured it out yet either but am still going to continue to move towards self sufficiency. If I end up alone in the woods so be it. For me the biggest problems has been not only finding compatible people but finding compatible people that can relocate... or just happen to be in the same area.
alot of kibbutzs are not religious, some are still hard left wing. i would say that the kibbutzs are the only place in palestine that civillisation reigns. there is an order with them and a respect for the human body. no doubt some kibbutzs will work you to death if you stayed there - i've heard a few horror stories of 10 hour days. the one i stayed on asked us to work 4 hours a day, we normally worked as a group. i would highly recommend the kibbutz as a place where young people go to see that another world could exist. oh yes if you go to palestine - stay away from religion it is extremely hardline there from which angle you take, its a case of near to church - far from god. back to kibbutzs if you don't like the kibbutz you're on, you can transfer. normally you'll go there as a volunteer and need to update your visa every 3 months or so. most if not all kibbutzs lay to the west of the green line for good reason they do not see the annexed territories as israel. the kibbutz is a positive influence on society, you can live work be fed, clothed etc for doing normal work and be educated. outside the walls lay religious fanatics and nutcases. as i say again i'd advise anyone going to the country to stay at the kibbutz and use it as a base of operations. drug use is not tolerated there so if you're a pot head this could be a problem. all this info is around 10 years out of date but i'd say much has stayed the same. if it weren't for my stupid decision to leave i'd probably still be there!!!
Yeah hear you - sometimes we can also be vague because we know that any incoming new member can change the whole of the community as well as someone leaving changing it. Within our own attempt was the idea that others would come who resonated with the land and we (a small segment of likeminded but extremely individualistic spirits into Spirit) would travel on looking for another site and starting another IC. Recognition was given that finding really close like minded spirits is fairly rare and through several sprouting of ICs maybe enough of that rarity would come together to form 1 as a more permanent springboard - but as well most of us are extremely nomadic or travel oriented and yearn to wander - being welcome home always feels good - and it's nice to have a lot of homes to come home to.
Ive lived most of my life in communes grew up in them. my mom and dad back in the day were potheads and I am a lovechild. I did the free love and drugs back when i was in my teens but as i have gotten older I have become more secure and less free with anything no drugs an occassional drink and thats about it for me. There are communes that arent into drugs now. Alot of them have to be otherwise they get shut down pretty quick. look more into eco villages or intentional communities these are the same as communes they usually arent religiously afilliated and usually no drugs or alcohol.
hey there--good news, have finally found three people in the world who i seem to click with. maybe coincidentally we are all around the same age and of similar backgrounds. we are selling the santa cruz land as it has increased much in value and the million dollar home yuppies are begining to move in. we will stay in cal. but are hoping also to get a secondary space in the EU. we are more likely than not as a group moving more towards southern california and on more acreage so we can kind of build an enclosed musical encampment. we need the quiet and space from the rest of the world to create. we are also building a music studio and rehersal space. but it tool like years to find even four of us who really clicked. all of us are kind of balanced, try to be non judgemental but have been around enough to be selective. j
