Peace Activists Block Scotland WMD SIte by Trident Plougshares
Email: media (nospam) tridentploughshares.org (unverified!) 23 Aug 2004 Press Release: 23rd August 2004 at 3.30pm

70 arrests as peace activists block British WMD site
    [IMG]
70 people, including four members of the Scottish Parliament, have
been arrested during the blockade of Faslane naval base on the Clyde.

From 6.30 this morning there were long tailbacks of worker traffic
as the protesters besieged the gates of the base, sitting down in the
roadway and locking on to each other. Two climbers scaled lamp-posts and hung
across the main gate of the base a large banner reading "Nuclear Free
    Scotland".
The base was disrupted for almost nine hours as gates cleared by
police were blocked again by activists.

The MSPs arrested are Mark Ballard, Francis Curran, Rosie Kane and
Patrick Harvie. Along with the others they are likely to be released from
    police custody this evening.
The blockade has now been closed with a formal ceremony but further
actions against the base may be taken during the rest of the day.

Overnight two Scandinavian activists, Tiina Sarkinen, 23, a plant
scientist from Finland, and Anna Goransson, 24, a student from Sweden, swam
into the high security berths where the Trident submarines are berthed and got
200 metres inside the boom before being apprehended. Early this morning
Petter Joelson (27), from Goteborg in Sweden, and Per Hilkrstrom (22), from
Nosrkoping in Sweden breached security at the Trident nuclear warhead
store at Coulport on Loch Long, five miles from Faslane.

A Big Blockade spokesperson said: "We are delighted that so many
people have been willing today to take a stand against Britain's weapons of
    mass destruction."

The Trident Ploughshares camp at Coulport continues until 1st
    September,
with the prospect of further direct action against the Trident bases.

I recieved this letter today. As these guys often go up to Faslane maybe you folks could send your solidarity?

    Thanks guys.:)

    Hello,

Irene is part of the group of women, including myself, that entered RAF
Lakenheath last October with a camera to gather information on the illegal
free fall nuclear bombs inside the base.
We where charged with criminal damage and given a 3 year conditional
    discharge and costs.
Irene decided that she would not pay the massive £500 costs and when she
went to court for non-payment of fines last week the Judge sentenced her to
    21 days in prison.
Irene was not ready for this and had no books or any thing else with her at
    all.
There is confusion on her release date but it may be Friday 27th.
Please send cards of support to Irene if you can. This is her first prison
sentence and I am sure she would love to hear from you all.

I am hoping to visit Irene tomorrow, so any messages could be emailed to me
and I shall pass them on.

    In Peace,

    Mell

That jobs day sounds like a good idea, I live at Bilston Glen Anti-Bypass Protest Site (http://www.bilstonglen-abs.org.uk) and we've recently had around thirty visiting Spanish, it's being the festival and that, and us being so close to Edinburgh, a lot of them are great people, and fantastic to have around, but then there are the ones who treat the place as a free holiday resort. You know we have magic fridges, the food just appears in them, and that wood pile, it just gets bigger by magic! But we're constantly looking for new faces here too, especially ones that speak English, that's a joke really, I just get envious cos I can't speak to Spanish people, because of the lack of Spanish. Also more females! There are only two girls on site! Yeah. but please come visit us. For more info see the website link above.

:) Ahhh...good to see some Bilstonites going about aswell....

Craig was one of the *65* arrested, but i didn't see the point in doing actions. The base is open all year round and it is much easy to do an effective action against it when there is far less police. There was something like 6 police officers to 1 protester, so everyone was nicked before they could do anything worthwhile. The big blockade is good for publicity, but that is all. The base know months before hand when its going to happen, so they can prepare for it. All of the non-essential staff were given a paid holiday, and the majority of the rest were brought in on boats. So the road blockades caused very little disruption. Its just an excuse for MSP's like Rosie Kane to get in front of the camera and look like they are part of the cause, when she has never visited to camp once.

I was arrested too, did anyone else get told that fish and macaroni cheese were vegan at the police station? They got really angry with me there cos I kept saying that I wouldn't eat cheese and fish cos they weren't vegan... fucking screws!

You're right the blockades don't do much, but they spread the word a bit.

I thought that the vegal halaal meat was the best that night actually, the police were hilarious. Whilest it didnt do that much it was fun and there was a lot of media, as for the comment about Rosie Kane, she really does care about the cause and whilest not living on site has been going to the blockade for years, i dont think its fair to say its just an oppertunity for her to be seen by the press doing something moral. She was locked on with us and was one of the last people arrested, one thing she kept repeating when being interviewed was that it wasnt fair to focus so much on her as she had been at the blockade for years and no one paid her attention until she was an mp.

i'm sorry but i have to disagree with you about Ms.Kane. I never said she had to live at the site to do believe in the cause, but she has never botherd to visit or see the people that do it day in day out. If she's not doing it for publicity then why doesn't she come down when the cameras aren't their and do an action?
