Obviously we not still there, but seeing how long it lasted, could the movement still be called a success?
I should have never begun to start with but that was when Kennedy was President and America had been at peace for a long time-The last war was in Korea in the 50s ; so when that the communists started their shit we thought it would not last-I don't think Kennedy would have commited to that war -He would have used negotiations to get the enemy to back down-Just as he did the Russians on the Cuba nuke thing-We were soooo close to nuke showdown at that moment it was scary-If one side blinked we would not be right now!-The war got bigger and biggerr then Kennedy was killed-Then you had Lyndon Johnson making decisions and he started with the carpet bombing-Tons of bombs being dropped-and these were not precision guided-Many people burned up from napalm-Lots of collateral damage was done-Now-in the early 60s the peace movement was basically starting at colleges and universitys As the war continued and Nixon took office and the war along with the lies and corruption of Watergate pushed the people of America to the boiling point-What started out as just pockets of draft resisters and war protesters grew to being the whole country demanding an end to all the killing-Too many of our sons and daughters were coming home in body bags-Many more then now-but then as now we lost direction as to how to win this thing and get out-We should have learned from that one-Then as now we did not have enough allies with us-Stopping communism is a real good thing-I lived in Greece for awhile and I saw what happens when people are run with a tyrant for a leader-Democracy is worth fighting and dying for-if you like freedom-but we need to wait until we are threatened -We cannot go out and stop the way all countries run their governments-Was it a success-Yes absolutely-It would have been nice to stop it much sooner though-The men and women that went their were heros-They fought hard and died and many had no choice -The draft was very difficult to avoid-It took alot to keep from being drafted-I was called to the draft center in Oakland in 67-I was 18 and prime-They wanted my ass!-Joan Baez and others-maybe Dylan were having a protest out front as I walked past them to go in there-I flunked ( with some help) and was never bothered again-The war was brutal and was on the tv everynight-It ended and now this one will too-it will not get any bigger-we all voted and America has spoken!-Bush has no alternative now but to listen to the American people instead of the voices in his head-!God Bless a peaceful nation-maybe the world will begin to like us again-hope so-
