whats that all about and when did that term first come in?
I'm starting to feel really old, I have however noticed it tends to be used in the negative sense by people?

Samhain, I'm in the same boat as you. And I'm eight years younger. I started hearing the term Junior year of college, and had no idea where it came from. I know it originated from some music of the late eighties, but now it's applied to a broader category of music. It's a "scene" and a label, and I'm not sure why it exists.

is this right? .... according to google search....

    13.emo[IMG]668 up, 353 down[IMG]Emo is:

    -A label for emotional people
    -A subgenre of rock
    -A style of clothing

    Emo is NOT:
    -goth
    -punk
    -a mix of the above

    The Label:
Emo is used to describe very emotional kids. They tend to cry a lot, and fall in love easily.

    The Music:
The melodic sounds of emo originiated from punk, except the lyrics are... well... emotional, and tend to dwell on feelings and relationships. Some genres of emo are:

    ~Screamo
    ~Post emo indie
    ~emocore
    ~Emo hardcore

Some emo bands don't have band shirts or anything to promote the band and thus die out quickly. sometimes, they don't even put track labels on their CD's.

    The Style:
    ~Clothes~
    -Studded belts
-Tight girl pants (boys and girls)
    -Band T-shirts

    ~Hair~
Girls: Swept in the front, a dark or red color. sometimes highlighted or has chunks in it
Boys: Swept in the front, spiked in the back, a dark or red color. sometimes highlighted or has chunks in it.

They usually tend to cut it themselves.

Go to fourfa.com for a more detailed description.

Note! Not all emo kids are depressed and whiney. Some are happy, immature, bouncy kids.

The emo kid's band fell apart after his breakup.

People call me emo, because I listen to that kind of music. I'm sick of it, really. People just go around saying "I hate Emos, I want to slap Emo kids, blah blah blah" all because they apperantly hate life and cut themselves. I know tons of "emo kids", and like I said, I've been called emo myself, but I, nor do they, hate life or anything. I just don't think its fair that people can't just dress the way they want to, or listen to the music that they want to, without constantly being ridiculed and made-fun of. Come on, making fun of people because of how they dress is a little childish...I wish everyone would grow up.

Emo started as just a genre of music, very emotional music, ie the singers would sometimes break down and cry during the songs. My friend listened to it before the word took on this whole other meaning.

Now it seems to be referring to a scene or look, mostlyof men, who dress in all o rmostly black and wear makeup, style their hair, dye their hair, etc. Personally, I think some of 'em look hella hot but then, most of those would've been classed as goth just a couple years ago *shrugs*

but seriously, a lot of the emo "look" these days used to be what folks would call goth. It's just a little more, I dunno, tender? Less badass about it or something.
