My fiance' and I are taking our honeymoon to amsterdam and would like some help planning as I am usually really busy with reform business and my regular job. I am looking for some nice, clean, cheap hotels with an in room restroom. Best coffeeshops to hit for the finest herbs, and other stuff to do in amsterdam. I know this is all scattered throughout posts, but if you would please just fire some ideas out, it would be much appreciated Regards, niandra
scattered posts? guess ya don't know.... I put em together! http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=189198 P.S. Congratulations!
Thanks...however in that thread..there isn't specific reviews or choices about hotels? I want something close to the good coffeeshops in a 150-250 USD range..
Niandra as for hotels i cant comment on since ive never stayed in one here. Coffeeshops: my personal favs Grey Area,Dampkring,Tweede Kamer,Barney's and Centraal Station Stuff to do: Museums off course,Anne Frank House off course, Flea Market at Waterlooplein, thinks its the 3rd stop on the metro from centraal station, Paradiso for dancing,Melkweg too, little known but cool club called Korsakoff its near Paradisio. Windmills in Zaandam which is 10 minute train ride from centraal. Vondaalpark but i imagine its a tad cold but cool to walk through. Canal boat rides off course, rent a bike and ride around. The Heniken Experience, the Amsterdam zoo is cool also. Albert Cuypt market. Also the theatre Tuchinski near muntplein, beautiful, beautiful movie theatre,i mean truely amazing sight to see a movie, you can rent a love couch there and have them serve you wine and snacks while you watch a flick. Thats near muntplein. Theres also the Cannabiz college, never been there also. Then theres the sex museum near central, the torture museum. Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein for drinking and clubs. Try Dutch Pancakes along the singel canal which is the first canal from central, lots of little places which just sell pancakes. the flowermarket Off course the Red Light District which is a must see. Theres also Madaam Tossoueas wax museum near damn square. let me know if you have any other questions, ive been living here for close to two years si i can point you towards a good variety of things to do.
Awesome, thanks for all the information. That movie theatre sounds like a great time for her and i on our honey moon. Also, thanks for all the other recommendations. Anyone else have good ideas for a hotel in the central part that you have experience from staying in?
Ok I took my chances with priceline and end up with this 4 star hotel a little out of the center. Does anyone have any reviews or perspectives on this hotel? http://www.moevenpick-hotels.com/hotels/Amsterdam/welcome.htm It looks decent, but just a small walk to central Amsterdam
it looks like a nice place. I've stayed in Movenpicks in Switzerland, but never in Holland. Needless to say, they are very nice places. (My friend would always call it the "Move-and-pick-it-up") lol. Although it is close to the center, it is north of everything in the center, parallel to Central Station. MINIMUM 20 minute walk to Dam Square and further, much further to the Leidseplein. That's why they invented the (WELL RUN!!) tram anyway, you will enjoy it! this map comes from the link you provided.
Awesome, thanks for all the input. Yah it doesn't look like it is a horribly bad area. I am more of a herbalist so the drinking and clubs in Leidseplein won't be of much interest. I can't wait to hop off the plane, the train, check in, then down for our first spliff!
Thanks man, i appreciate all the help from all of you. Several NORML members in our chapter are going over New Year's , so I am sure I will hear plenty of recommendations from them as well. I CAN'T WAIT!
As it's a honeymoon I suggest A candlelight night time cruise around the city http://www.lovers.nl/ It's probably the best way to see it all in comfort without getting hooked up with all the crap that occurs around the RLD if your on foot.
Thanks brainless... Also, does anyone know where to get a cheap flight? Tickets are around 1200 USD per person right now for june 11th, 2007 to june 17th, 2007. Pricey flight!
i don't mean to throw a curve into your plans but that hotel you booked is 15 minutes from everything.... i've rented apartments in that area in the past and in my opinion the location is a major pain in the ass. you need to either walk 15 minutes or hop on 1 bus on the prins hendrikkade to central station everytime you want to hit the city centre. If your not stuck with a deposit yet, I'd consider rebooking elsewhere. the links i provided in one of my previous posts are very nice hotels from the 130-250 euro per night range and the locations can't be beat. with a big budget like that you have plenty of options. if location is top priority there is always: the north end of town has more coffeeshops and has more public transportation...... http://www.ibishotel.com/ibis/fiche...che_hotel.shtml these places are nicer and more in your price range http://www.thegrand.nl/ http://amsterdam.swissotel.com/ http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/cp/1/en/hotel/amsnl?&cm_mmc=mdpr-_-TripAdvisor-_-na-_-na Most of the dancing spots are in the center of the city (15 minute walk south of the hotels above) The dancing spots are near the area's called "leidesplein" and "rembrandtsplein" http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/AMSNT or the famous Dylan which is slightly out of your price range.... http://www.hotelrooms.com/cgi-bin/s...x?ID=1117050773 But regardless of your choice have a great time! Cheers, Koopa
Can't rebook...priceline rate...it is close to some museams and such....and if 15 minutes was a big deal to her and I we could get a bike etc... But personally, I work an office job and I am american (mcd's, taco hell...) a 15 min walk is minimal especially only once or twice a day, plus give us a chance to work off some of the pancakes...

I had a friend that just came back from amsterdam, and that the hotel we chose is yes...15 mins away. But he also said if u plan on only doing that trip once a day then it isn't to bad. We could use the exercise on a bike or walking.
walking isn't bad but, i'd rather spend my energy walking "around the center" rather than "to the center". i recommend the bikes..... they will get you anywhere in a hurry! besides....millions of satisfied users of bikes in amsterdam can't be wrong
Koopage is dead on with his bike advice as to gettin' around with ease. I highly recommend the following Rental place after a stellar experience with them last year. They gave me a new bike after returning the first one midway thru our vacation due to a flat tire, no questions asked. Bike City Don't let bike riding in Amsterdam intimidate you. Just take it slow and follow the well laid out paths. Stop and get your bearings if you start stressin'. Can't wait to finally see you on a bike this year Koopage.
