why did they practice this for a long time?? and still do they do this????? I saw videos of lobotomies on mental patients where they drive a pick in through the eye socket, its the most disturbing thing I ever saw....... wtf!!! why in the name of science did they ever do that?? and all the complications from that.... man I hope in a past life I never was that insane to where they performed a frontal lobotomy on me, damn.
to turn them into zombies rather than spazzes I guess it is very disturbing, as is shock therapy so many horrible things were down in the name of science
I know something about this. I had a great uncle who had one. He was in a mental institution during the lobotomy craze. He pulled a knife on another patient and that was all it took. They go in with a knife and just mash up the frontal lobe (I've never heard of the through the eye thing). My uncle was like, uhhh, soulless. My grandmother would bring him around and walk him over to a wall and tell him to stand there and he would never move or anything. It was very sad. But he never pulled a knife on anybody again. I don't think they do these anymore, as least, I hope not
alright the cerebral cortex is the part of our brain that does all the higher end processing, the part that separates our brain from other mammals. if we didnt evolve this section we would be really primitive still. the cortex is made up of 4 lobes, each of them responsible for different areas of functioning. the frontal lobe controls a lot of judgement, decision making, planning, impulses, and also has a lot of dopamine receptors, which is a pleasure chemical and influences drives. so basically they would give frontal lobotomies to people who were chronically antisocial. rapists, psychos, shit like that. they go in and cut the tissue and smear it around i guess to destroy all the nerve pathways.
yes, I know that line........... Id rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy........ Ive seen lobotomies where they take an ice pick in through the eye socket...... not through the eye itself, but up on top of the eye, where the socket is, and they would wiggle the pick around to cut the frontal lobe, but alot of times they would mess up and cut something else..... it was the craziest thing I have ever seen, they would move that ice pick around, and the head would move as well...... god....... very disturbing...... shock therapy........ only time I saw anything that involved shock therapy, it was in one flew over the cuckoos nest...... I remember seeing a program about shock therapy though, where they didnt harm any subjects, but they would have these people come in....... and a person would be in the next room...... they would have electrodes attached to their bodies, and the other person had to adminster a shock to them if they got a question wrong...... it was rather disturbing to see how a person could be influenced in administering shocks to someone for getting things wrong, by a little coercion from the people running the experiment....... of course, no one was hurt, they only heard screams and such from another room, they never saw the subjects twitching, or no pain was ever involved, it was all faked, but even after all the screams, people still would administer even more painful shock to every question answered wrong....... just because those in charge would tell them they have to for the name of the experiment........
sorry to hear about your uncle by the way. yeah, there was a definite timeframe where this was widely practiced in psychiatry. i bet a lot of people got them that didnt really need it. and now they have chemical lobotomies. i don't know if they still do the surgical one, i'm sure they do in extreme cases.
shock therapy they still do for severe depression. back in the day someone noticed that a lot of people with depression would feel a lot better if they had a seizure. so then they found out that when you're convulsing it releases electrical impulses in your brain, which does something to repair or reroute the neural activity. i don't know exactly how it works though.
Jesus Fuckin Christ! I had a really bad day guys..Now I'm inexplicably grateful, fuck! I guess it really could be worse! :stunned: :ack: Oh, & sorry to hear about your uncle Tarabelle.
