I haven't entered a Walmart for over twenty years. And I am poor, but I'd rather pay a little more to support my local small retailers than add to it's coffers. http://www.corpocracy.net/
Good article! Disney is another company that gets it's products from overseas sweatshop factories. In Bangladesh the minimum wage is 17 cents an hour! They hire young girls and women. Nowadays most companies only look for the lowest cost labor pool! They don't care. Bustramp
What I find nauseating is the so-called christians around here (the same ones who voted for Bush) shop there all the time regardless of these kinds of facts. They believe walmart is a "good christian business" because they sell bibles and say Merry Xmas and don't sell controversial magazines. grrrrrr
Well in my little town there's been a Walmart retail store for about 20 years and a warehouse operation. Just last night they won their bid to build a super center right behind their old retail operation. There's a Super Center just 18 miles away, not sure why they see a need for another one so close by. But we'll end up with another huge empty building for years after they open their new mega store and close the old retail operation. I am sure they're getting tax breaks for decades like the warehouse operation did. They promise new jobs but in the end they bring in staff from other areas. And the locals will probably end up with fewer local grocery outlets to choose from. I personally hate their lack of respect for employees. And none of that has changed. Get injured and one of the supervisors accompanies you to the doctor of their choice.
I sometimes drive by the Warehouse when they are having their morning rah rah rally, it's sad really. Group mentality how do you fight it?
If you put your purse in a Walmart locker, while you are employed you are agreeing that it can be searched by a supervisor. If you are an employee and you park in their parking lot while you are at work, you have agreed to allow your car to inspected by someone on their staff. They even have surveilance cameras in their bathrooms. But who inspects their books?
Lets look at a common product, sayyyy, a HP computer. walmart will special order their HP computer, with cheaper parts, hence the cheaper price. also, when they say lower prices, that is true to an extent, on the low end models though. walmarts low end models are cheaper than other stores low end models. and its a gimmick that works. often walmart's high end models are actually much more expensive compared to high end models else where. But since some of their prodcuts are cheaper, they can get away with the slogan they always spew. and god forbid you want to price check on these better models, no no, walmart will kick you out if they see you with a pad and pencil! walmart is terrible not only for mom and pop businesses they drive out of town, but even for the businesses that sell products for walmart to store on their shelves. see, walmart declares the price you will sell it for. they decide how the product is made to fit their desire. If you don't fit our need, bye! and of course the benefits for the workers are absolute shit! the way they treat workers is shit. I hate that my brother works at a walmart.
being from arkansas (where walmart began) it's hard to even try to go other kinds of stores. they're actually building the FOURTH walmart in my town rather soon. it's so sad.
they tried to build one at the site of some old ruins...I think in Mexico but they protested and got them to go away! But stories like that are all the more reason to f---ing hate the place, the epitome of america, ughh, gives us average anti walmart citizens a bad name.
I worked at Wal-Mart. My mother currently works in one. The benefits are great and the pay is great. They treat their employees wonderfully. And, they don't have cameras in the bathroom, nor do they search your personal belongings without first getting you and you go with them. Wal-Mart is supporting my family. I love Wal-Mart. It's cheap and easy for lower middle class folks.
There is this girl in one of my classes that works at Wal-Mart, she's going to quit soon because they have decided to make the raises smaller and longer apart so they can get rid of long time employees and hire new ones part-time. They are building a new Wal-Mart here and ruining a beautiful mountain veiw. Ass holes.
I have personally seen the surveillance cameras in the ceiling of the Walmart Distribution Warehouse in our town. And there is a lawsuit in Louisiana that has been documented (http://www.careerjournal.com/myc/legal/19990209-canter.html). 38% of Walmart employees spent more than one-sixth of their Wal-Mart income on health care last year. 5% of their employees are on public assistance. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/26/b...66bb026e&ex=1287979200&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
I have personally been in quite a few Wal-Marts and have YET to see cameras in the bathrooms. I have been in one Warehouse....and, no cameras in the bathrooms. Of course there are cameras looking over the merchandise....thiefs DO exist. My mother has insurance through them and spends only a few dollars a month. That's covering her and my step dad.
