I live in a big, very old house, so of course it's creaky and groany and kind of creepy, but stuff has been happening lately that goes beyond old house creepy stuff.

I used to hear noises in my house when we first moved in, like someone was brushing their teeth in the bathroom; weird, but I didn't think much of it at the time. this stopped after a while, but the upstairs hallway continued to have things going on in it, like some nights I could hear footsteps when I was downstairs underneath the hallway, usually late at night. there is a spare room at the end of the hallway, and I quite often found the door open, although there is no reason why it should be, or there was a cat locked in the room like the door was opened and then closed. then for a while, I was hearing distinctive footsteps downstairs in the living room while I was upstairs, and it was really freaking me out. so I asked my dad about it, because he knows a lot about this kind of stuff, and he said it's pretty simple to get spirits out of your house, and he would do it, and for months afterward I never heard anything again, the door at the end of the hallway stayed closed, and everything was good.

but a few nights ago I heard the footsteps upstairs again; then last night, I was alone in the house and I was taking a shower before bed, and as it was pretty hot, the bathroom mirror got really fogged up. when I got out of the shower, there was a place in the mirror that had been distinctly cleared off, like you do when you need to see into it and it's all fogged up. I know I didn't do it, and so I got really, really freaked out. I don't know, this just goes way beyond hearing footsteps, you know? I'm going to be alone here until sunday, and I'm scared that something is here.

does anyone know what I can do?

The best thing to do is to remember that spirits are harmless. Scary as shit... but they can't hurt you. My friend had a ghost in her apartment once that would wake her up in the middle of the night making noise until one day she got up and yelled at it to shut the fuck up and leave her alone. Made it really clear that she was serious. Never heard the ghost again. I dunno... it's worth a shot to try & communicate with it. If it's evil I suppose it might keep messing with you but if it's just a wandering ghost, or a ghost that doesn't know it's dead yet and thinks you're the ghost, talking to it may help. Good luck with that. Keep us posted as to what happens. Also.. try smudging your house with some sage. Sage is supposed to be very cleansing with unwanted energies in your home. You just walk through your entire home, even the closets and tucked away areas, with smoldering sage and let the smoke get into every corner of your home. You can say some cleansing stuff too, entirely up to you. You can google 'smudging with sage' to learn more about.

Sometimes I'll be washing dishes, or just standing in the bathroom fixin my hair or whatever and i'll feel something brush against my back, or touch my shoulder. Sometimes in the corners of my eyes i see little balls of grey and white zooming by. Sort of like mist. Sometimes it looks like a figure. I wonder if im nutts? Hm. Anyways, the point of me telling you this is that they won't hurt you. They are very scarey indeed but you shouldn't worry. They're just lonely.

Familydog - Although I am responding to this post of yours rather late, I chose to respond anyway - you said you live in this house, so you're probably still there. I have felt the presence of a ghost three times in my lifetime so far, and from my own experiences and from stories that I've read about other people's experiences with ghosts, the various things you have described as going on in your house are definitely classic ghostly occurrences. It seems as though ghosts always do certain things the same, no matter who or what they are, and no matter where they are. That's how we come to the conclusion, ultimately, that there is a ghost present. Some of those classic things that ghosts do are: opening or closing doors (and, they usually open it or close it while you're away from the room ... so, you'll come back and it'll be the opposite of what it was when you left); you will hear footsteps; they will move things; they will make other noises (like you heard); generally speaking, they do things to let you know they are present. And, they have a tendency to do these things when someone is alone - that happened to me in two of my experiences - the darn thing would only come out and do things when I was alone - yikes!

I kind of agree with Shutterfly about their tendency to not harm you. The kind of activity you have experienced with this ghost tells me that it's the kind of entity that is just letting you know that it's present. Why they seem to feel the need to do that, I haven't a clue; they just do. I can well understand your feeling of being frightened; they scare me too. I think part of the fear comes from the fact that they seem to have the upper hand, in a sense .... I mean, think of it .... they're letting us know they are there, but we can't see them. But it seems as though they can see us, because they're doing things they know will freak us out, and they know that. So for me; it is, I guess, fear of the unknown; because we don't really know what a ghost is all about. I am very intruiged by that whole aspect, though; and I'd really love to do some "ghost research" , just as long as I wasn't alone when I was doing it! Take care, and if it becomes too stressful, just move. Nothing is worth that kind of stress if it starts getting to you. I had to do that, and the landlady returned my deposit - she knew about the ghost but hadn't told me!

    Sincere Regards, Michaela

Try communicating with the spirit, you never know what might happen. I doubt it's an evil one because from what you mentionned, the spirit doesn't make something bad. Also, don't be scared. I know it's hard but that's exactly their weakness. Show that you aren't scared

i agree with every one that posted here. communicate and dont be afraid. but if you feel that you are ever in harms way call a friend to come over or leave the house. plus if you feel that there is an entity that is "evil" call your father and have him remove the spirits once again. good luck

thanks, everyone, for your help. just an update, I tried to not be as scared of the ghost or spirit in my house, and that did help when I was alone. yesterday I had an appointment with a psychic, and asked about it, and she said that the ghost is a lady named anne who used to be a maid in a house that was on the land my house is on now, a long time ago when there was a rich family living here. she's not harmful at all, but she just wants us to know she's here because she was proud of the house that she took care of.

this really set my mind at ease, now that I know she's not trying to make me leave or anything, and we can just kind of hang out in the same house together

Classic case of a ghost with halitosis - probably died in some horrible toothpaste accident after getting a whiff of their own gum pus. Try appeasing the ghost leaving it some after dinner mints and a can of anti-dog-breath spray

Yeah, I agree very much so with everyone who said communicate with it. Just talk openly to it like you would if a stranger was present. I have had a couple of very strange and cool experiences doing this, so if a spirit is there, they can hear you, or so I believe anyways. Talk to the spirit, introduce yourself. He was there before you. It doesn't sound as if he is harmful.

I wouldn't try to smudge him away, as I understand it, friendly spirits like the smell of the sage. My house always smells of sage, and we have an ample variety of spirits here. I am told that sage is effective against dark and bad energy, and that these do not like the sage. Talk to your spirit. Tell it to come to you in a dream and identify itself to you. ;)

Sometimes I wonder if you can become friends with a spirit. I know this sounds really ridiculous but what I mean is that let's say you live inside a house with a friendly spirit and sometimes you could communicate with it.

I feel compelled to impart a story here. I use to own this house in a little town close to where I grew up, here in Ohio. This house was built in 1834. It was big and creaky and full of original stuff. It sat right on the main street of this little town and was one of the three original buildings in this town when it used to be only a stage coach route. All of the doors had the original old iron plate locks on them, but they weren't used anymore and had been replaced with modern locks above them. I had this idea that I would like to be able to use these old locks so I had an old skeleton key or two and wanted to see if they would work. Well they didn't and as a matter of fact; I got one seriously wedged in the lock. I had already had weird things happen at this house but didn't really give it much thought. So the key was wedged into this lock plate. I tried for twenty minutes to get it free and even tried to get it out with a pair of pliers just stopping short of breaking the key off in the lock. A friend of mine tried as well without any success. Finally as I was standing there pondering how I was going to get this key out of the lock; I said in desparation, "okay, if you let the key go I won't try to use the lock again !" the very next moment, the key dropped out of the lock and ont the floor. I said thank you and walked away pretty freaked out ! And that is just one of many things that happened in that house. Anyone interested in any of the other things ? Peace and Love !

Hey there from Ohio ! The town is Sugargrove and the stage coach route I spoke of was from Athens to Columbus ! Farout....what a coincidence huh ?! Athens has quite a history of bizarre happenings as you already know, and more than its share of creepy places ! I'm at work now, but I will post some more happenings from the old house tonight when I get home. Peace and Love !

When shit started happening in our house... especially after some renovating, we had our house blessed... You can do it yourself too as long as the intention is there. Bless every closet and every other nook and cranny ...Burn sage or sweetgrass, smudge all the rooms ....

Don't talk about the "ghost" in the house I found that helps alot.

We still have things happen from time to time though.

    Good luck.

Oh yah, because you seem to be ok with her being there, she probably will stay. you have to relly want it out for it to leave.

More from this old house.....The bizarre occurences never seemed to cease at this place. This house was originally a cabin that was added onto. It had a small root cellar, but a very shallow crawl space under the rest of it. So shallow in fact that you had to acces things through the floor of the first floor to do anything with the plumbing or whatnot. Now keep that information in mind for later. Shortly after we bought this house; this cat started to show up at the back screen door. It was summer and the house was opened up. This was the most bedraggled looking feline I had ever seen...the poor thing. It would come right up the three steps and look into the kitchen and let out a shallow broken meow. I put food out for it and even opened the door for it to come in. But it never ate the food, and it wouldn't go anyfarther than the doorway. It wouldn't come in ! This went on for quite a few weeks. Now comes the part I said to keep in mind. I started to inspect the place and see what I needed to fix or get covered for winter, and I found this section of floor that was cut and made into a sort of trap door to the crawlspace. This was hidden under a rug in a bedroom close the kitchen which was at the back of the house. So I opened this door and grabbed a flashlight. I had half of me upside down in this opening and looking in the crawlspace. I first looked to the right with the light and could see webs and pipes and some wiring to something. I wriggled myself around so I could look to the left, and as soon as I turned; I gasped ! Right there in front of me was the mummified corpse of a cat that had been trapped under the house and died. It looked as though it had been there for decades ! It was in a sort of mean posture with its mouth wide open like it was hissing and attacking ! Creepy man ! I came up out of there and din't go back down. The odd part of the whole thing was that once I discovered that cat under the house; I never saw that cat again that was coming to the door. And I realized at that point that the cat at the door was the same color as the fur on the cat under the house ! What do you make of that ? I have my own theories. Peace and Love

OK, I was gonna keep my mouth shut, but Grandpa Hippy, you sparked my interest. I too am from a town in Ohio, and lived in one of the oldest houses there, and I could have mirrored your description almost. I am from Marion, By the way. The house I lived in is on the east end of "The Loop". You can recognize it even, because there are two of them, identical, with big pillars out front and balconies, and they are built in a mirror image of one another.

The thing is, it takes so long to write the stories out and really do them justice. But man, I got some stories! lol. I was a total skeptic too, but it was proven to me pretty fast.

I'll tell some of mine if ya'll tell some of yours. :) I will stop back in and add more later, cuz I got to go for now. Peace....

The first thing we noticed was a propensity for the lights in our bedroom to come on... at inopportune times. :) These were old gas lamps that had been converted to electricity, and you literally had to turn a key like switch a full half turn to make them click on. Odd, but not all that scary.

Then at three am, there came the most incredible knocking and pounding on the attic floor directly above our bedroom. Sounded and felt like someone hiting the floor with a 12 pound sledge hammer. Now that'll wake you up out of a dead sleep with your heart pounding for sure!

Upon investigation, there was nobody in the attic, and the key was right where it was supposed to be. This went on for a while, and was one of the noises we later on identified. If you took the handle on a big old wooden tool box that belonged to my grandfather that was up in the attic, and lifted one end of it about a foot off the floor and slammed it down forcefully, that is the noise we heard.

Those Ohio ghosts must be pretty active :) More later... gotta go to work.

Farout Coopdog ! I look forward to hearing some more ! I'll send some more out this evening after work and supper. Have been to Marion many times....some creepy old houses there ! I guess there is alot on hauntings and the like in Ohio. There is a series of books called "Haunted Ohio". I've read some of one and it was pretty good. I'm not completely convinced regarding the whole haunting thing, but I love to explore old scary abandoned houses and buildings, and I have seen some bizarre things! Back later ! Peace and Love.
