Greed has existed since we all climbed out of the soup. I'm asking which of the given options you feel is a bigger threat to your civil liberties. Or maybe it's a combination?
Simply put corporate interest. The working man now has to submit to drug screening, locker checks. Some employers will not hire smokers, even though this is a legal act and carried on only in their personal homes and lifes. Poor credit checks are now an excuse not to hire an employee. And many employers when interviewing a possible hire mandate a credit check. The working man no longer has a guarrantee of a health or retirement plan. He's forced to work overtime without reporting it. Workers' Compensation has been so gutted that the worker has to litigate to qualify for compensation, that in many cases was clearly work related. All to protect the bottomline of corporations that don't value his labor. Think the executives of those corporations operate under those same restrictions? Workplace safety is now a non-issue, want the job, you work under the conditions provided, and don't even think of being a whistle blower, your life will be ruined.
True I selected corporations and globalization. Businesses have been given powers too far-reaching just for one to maintain the "privilege" of employment. Supposedly in matters of justice we are presumed innocent until proven guilty but pre-employment drug tests force some to prove their innocence before being allowed to earn a living. Greedy corporations have far too much power and money and more are moving towards micro-managing personal lives as a condition of continued employment. Legal activities are increasingly falling into the forbidden list under the guise of keeping health care costs under control. Greed on a personal level plays a role--- as a whole, we've been too busy surrounding ourselves with expensive toys to be bothered to pay attention or care that our government is selling our rights out. Nothing happens to us without our permission.
And too often we sell out because we are told if we allow this little infringement costs will be lower and employment will be better. It has hardly if ever held true. The only ones that have profitted have been the corporations. Health care costs held lower, hell most of us don't even receive health insurance anymore. We're told that Workers' Compensation revisions will make for more employment opportunities, I don't think this has proven true either. All it has accomplished is to make it harder for a worker to be compensated when injured on the job. There's a whole new retraining consulting industry that does nothing. I know I had to design a way to receive the training I wanted, because the mandated consulting firm ate up a huge portion of the amount I was entitled to under my compensation award. And the consulting firm couldn't figure it out on their own. I could have designed my own training program without funding those buttheads. But in order to qualify I had to accept the consulting firm I was assigned to by the state. But that's another story. Someone is getting rich but it's not the worker.
Now that the majority agrees that globalization is evil we must decide what economic system that nurtures community, protects global diversity, preserves indegenous cultures and peoples and also provides a very high standard of living for people. "If you favor federal intervention at home, you're a liberal. If you favor federal intervention abroad, you're a conservative. If you favor both, you're a moderate. If you favor neither, you're an extremist." -Joseph Sobran "They call us 'Neo-Nazis'! So what? We are against: Capitalists, Bolsheviks, Zionists, crooks, profiteers and parasites. We are against: Capitalism, Communism, Zionism, the replacement of our people by a mass of foreigners, destruction of the environment. We are for: German unity, social justice, racial pride, folk community, camaraderie." -Michael Kuehnen "All reactionaries are paper tigers. In appearance, the reactionaries are terrifying, but in reality they are not so powerful. From a long-term point of view, it is not the reactionaries but the people who are really powerful." -Mao Tse-Tung "Fascism was born to inspire a faith not of the Right (which at bottom aspires to conserve everything, even injustice) or of the Left (which at bottom aspires to destroy everything, even goodness), but a collective, integral, national faith." -Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world, indeed it's the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead "If I told you I thought a small group of people run the world and exploit the workers, you'd say I was left wing. If I told you who those people were, you'd say I was right wing. So I don't know." -Member of 'Black Block Anarchists' on Right vs Left "A man does not show his greatness by being at one extremity, but rather by touching both at once." -Blaise Pascal "No one is seeing the 'big picture.' Maybe we have to combine ideologies to achieve the perfect utopian government." -SGT. McVeigh, Timothy; Gulf War veteran. Persecuted, Prosecuted, and Executed by The Iron Heel in June '01 "I was a Marxist once, when I was about Thirteen. Then I read another book." -Bill White "The New American Patriot will be neither left nor right, just a freeman fighting for liberty. New alliances will form between those who have in the past thought of themselves as rightwingers, conservatives, and patriots with many people who have thought of themselves as leftwingers, progressives, or just liberal." -Louis Beam, Leaderless Resistance advocate "When the day comes, we will not ask whether you swung to the right or whether you swung to the left; we will simply swing you by your neck." -Robert Mathews, Declaration of War "More and more, people on both ends of the traditional political spectrum - are finding that their world views overlap. They are opposed to what are seen as the homogenizing forces of globalism. They despise Capitalism, with its tendency to concentrate wealth and to make people and economies more and more alike. They pine for nations of peasant-like folk tied closely to the land and to their neighbors. They fight for a pristine environment, a land unsullied by corporate agriculture and urbanization. They detest man-centered philosophies, seeing animals as no less important than humans. They reject rationalism in favor of a kind of mystical spirituality. Above all, these mainly young people -- in some ways, the descendants of the back-to-the-land hippies of the 1960s -- favor decentralization. These ideas have had a real impact on the American racist rock scene." -Southern Poverty Law Center, Neither Left Nor Right, 'Intelligence' Report
