The idea of 'feminist' and 'girlish' has a different context in non-Western culture. In Russia, for example, the woman is the traditional head of the household. Women had domestic power, men economic power. Women in the west were much more subservient compared to traditional societies like Russia or Africa.

These non-Western women didn't need a feminist revolution, they were happy in their own skins. From the traditional head of the house, women gradually moved into a position of economic equality as well. My experience when I stayed in my wife's country for a couple of months was that women were totally equal and achieved this equality without debate or argument or hostility.

The end result is that these women didn't need to sacrifice their natural feminism to achieve equality. The vast majority of women are happy to be women, and happy for men to be men, and are happy that both genders are different and yet equal.

As a man, when you do cross the line, you get told! Straight up, no sulking, no unexpected withdrawl of sex. You get told you did something she wasn't happy about and don't do it again! From the three or four cross-cultural relationships I have had, this has been a common element, women are sweet and lovely but also confident to stand up for themselves, because this is the traditional way. They have always been in charge of the house, and they will exercise this power with confidence. As a man, it is easy to accept an admonishing and move on!

It is hard to describe, it is more than short hair and power suits, it is a whole perspective on life and relationships and understanding what makes men men, and what makes women women and an understanding that a man doesn't have to change to be a good partner.

Of course you will find femnists in Russia, or Zimbabwe, but they are few and far between compared to the UK, USA or Australia.

I checked out Russia myself, but then I changed my mind after I found out the majority of them have aids.

Aids is becoming an issue in Russia and other Eastern European countries, but I wouldn't say the majority of the population has it quite yet! Not even the worst parts of Africa are that bad! In Russia it is mostly confined to IV drug users, and the challenge is to prevent it spreading into the general population.

    And what about Colombia?
I heard somewhere Colombia has one of the lowest divorce rates in the world - if it's true I think that speaks volumes about the women and the culture. A Foreign Affair goes there, TLC goes there, Cherry Blossoms has some women from Colombia but not sure if they are doing any tours. I am sure it's much better than the press makes it out to be, if I were going I'd go with a tour group.

low divorce rate means nothing. sometimes there is a greater stigma attached to divorcing in other cultures.

also religious reasons. look at the orthodox jews. those women place their lifes into that religion and those beliefs are interconnected with marriage. there is more to lose, more at stake if you are to divorce.

its not so much low divorce rate that should be looked at, but the difficulty of getting out of a marriage. some countries and/or religions make it unbearably difficult.

and lets think of this: sure columbia has a low divorce rate, but how many of the married couples in countries like columbia with Low DR are happily married? how many are unhappily married? death do us part is actually taken literally in other countries.

My boss is quite well traveled and said to me once that choosing between a Russian girl and a Colombian girl is like choosing between between a James Bond Girl and Jennifer Lopez... doesn't sound like a bad life either way.
