How long did it take for you to find out that you were pregnant after having sex? With current methods for pregnancy detection, is there a way of knowing sooner then a missed period if one is positive or not?

there are pregnancy tests that can be taken before you realize that you are late, but they usually are a lot more inaccurate, I believe also more expensive then the normal test kits

My first pregnancy was confirmed 21 years ago. The tests were to be taken a few weeks after a missed period. So, I was 8 weeks pregnant or more when I found out with my first three pregnancies (I had a miscarraige between my first and second births.) My next baby was born in 1991 and I think you had to wait at least a week after you were late. With my last, it was a surprise, I found out in 1999, and I think I may have been 7 weeks pregnant.

with both of my viable pregnancies, I took the pregnancy test between cycle days 35-40, because my cycles were not regular and were usually around 30-35 days long. I've had too many false positives (which my doctor thinks were "chemical pregnancies") using those early detection tests on the market, First Response I think it was? Anyway, I know that conception, for me, does not guarantee pregnancy, so I chose to wait a bit longer to avoid the upset.

I knew about a week after my missed period. I was certain 4 days later, after the second positive pg test.

But you can know at least 18 days after ovulation, if you chart your cycles using the Fertility Awareness Method. :)

I was a day late and took a pregnancy test. I am so regular that at even a day I was concerned about pregnancy. The early detection tests I've seen say they work only about 4 days before your missed period. I would just let a missed period be your guide and then go from there. Whenever I took early pregnancy tests all they seemed to do was bring on my period the next day.

Apart from a feeling of "I just kind of knew", I was the type that, if I was a day late, well, we were pregnant. So I would take a HPT immediately after the first day of my missed period.

The pregnancy tests years ago were really something. You needed a degree in Chemistry just to use them. (LOL!) The first time I had sex (it was 1979, I beleive.) OF COURSE, I was late that month.....there were no pregnancy tests available to the public. I waited nearly 3 weeks until I got a period (I have never been regular, but this was awful!) I remember getting it at work, I used to work at Marshal Fields, and in those days, they would ask you if you were pregnant on the employment application, and ask when your last period was. I mean, as late as 1979, that was LEGAL! Anyway, after being late I got it. The next year, I was really late again. There were these test that had a test tube, and a bunch of lab equipment, and you had to pee, first morning only, then put the drops into this test tube, with a package of this stuff (I can only assume it was HCG) and then the tube went onto a holder with a mirror, so you could see the bottom. THREE HOURS LATER, you had to come back (and the test could not be moved while it was testing) and look in the mirror. If you saw a "Circle" you were pregnant, if it was just funny looking mess, you weren't IT ALWAYS LOOKED LIKE CIRCLES TO ME!!!! It was years before the color change tests (again with a test tube, and hours of waiting) came on the market, that was the type I used with Sunshine. I think it was a 45 minute wait by then (this would have been late 1985.) I think if it were pink or purple you were pregnant. Bear kept checking it, and I kept yelling at him to wait until it was done (I had always done my pregnancy tests by myself until then) he was yelling "It's pink, it's very very pink" And we were thinking pink was Positive. At the last minute it turned purple, Bear goes and gets the test, and he's UPSET (we hadn't planned a baby, yet, I had been planning to go to Med School or Grad School first, but we also wanted a baby, because I had been told it would be "difficult" to get pregnant, and we hadn't gotten around to getting married ect) then we read the directions (which he had put in the garbage can) and realized that purple was Positive.

The rest is history. At least for us. :)

LOL the first preg test I ever took was that test tube with the blue dye you dropped down into your urine and waited a couple hours to see either a circle or a dot... in the mid-80's I think it was.

I just knew too. I started getting sick really early (before I even missed my period) and I knew I was pregnant...of course the test confirmed it but I was already convinced

    I didn't KNOW until I was 3 months pregnant.
It happened at the beginning of the year and I stay sick pretty much from Dec. to March. So, I blamed being EXTREMELY sick and not being able to eat anything on my missing period.
Then, in March, my boobs hurt. These fine mamas on this forum told me to get a test and that's when I knew for sure. HD confirmed it March 15.
