I've had this thought really strongly for the past year or so. To be the next Joan Baez or something would be so amazing :D

We should all group together and put on a folk revival concert haha.

Ah well, you could hop a flight over here [IMG]

Do you guys write your own stuff? I try and fail miserably :& I'm getting there though...it makes me feel so uncreative just playing other people's songs.

I'm quite good with chords and melodies, but crap with lyrics. I have a few people who supply me with lyrics but i'd like to write my own.

I also write a few tunes in a session style, mainly on mandolin but sometimes banjo or squeezebox.

I Havent Even tried to write my own music, im too scared :) You Know, plenty of famous folk stars in history often did trad. songs and their own interpretations Of other peoples songs (take Joan Baez, Or Richie Havens, for example) I don't think the creativity is nessessarly in the writing of the songs, so much as in the way you can sing them. Ive been bad, though, i don't even know any songs. My bridge broke on my gutiar and sawed all the strings off (Right after I Learned my FIRST 2 Chords!), and i don't have the money to get it fixed. But when i do, I plan to not even worry about writing my own songs at first. First im gonna make at least a setlist of "Creative covers". Hopfully, Im still young enough to do all that shit and get some recognition.

Yeah that's mostly what I do now- 'creative covers'
but one day soon I'll be sure to write my own song/songs :)

I guess that every songwriter sometimes thinks about getting famous and travelling around the world. What if your song would be played in all the radio stations...
I also thought about this....but above all I'm writing and playing music because of an inner impulse that pushes me forward to create something...
Actually I don't care if i become famous or not, all I want to do is record my music (realize my dreams).
If you're focused on getting famous you probably will be disappointed once.
In the modern music business it's rather the manager who promotes you than the quality of your music which is important.
Nevertheless the thought of being a secong Bob Dylan that forms a whole generation whit his music is really exiting.

I suppose I'm rare. I am just starting to get noticed in my hometown and it's nice, but I don't want to become a big folk star and tour the world. I feel that when you do that the focus starts to change and as a result the music you write starts to change. The best music I write is at work in the middle of the night when no one is around. I have 24 originals and 50+ covers that I play live. I mostly play on the street, I find it to be the most gratifying form of creative expression. It also pays the best. I use to book gigs in the bars and coffee houses around town but bartenders are a huge pain in the ass and not enough people go to coffee houses around here. The most I ever made in a bar/coffee house is $20.00 for a 2 hour show, where as on the street I have made up to $36.00 per hour and I can play for as long as I want. The secret is location, location, location. I sit down with my guitar in front of a multi-plex movie theater (people are always going to movies reguardless of what ever else is going on in town) and play my little heart out. People like to stand around and chill to my music until their movie starts. I'm currently working on a solo album to sell while I play. It's also much better exposure playing on the streets rather than in a business. Besides bars around here either want thrash metal or country music, they think that is all people are interested in.

I think it's a matter of getting noticed withn the folkie scene.
I have a few clubs around the country that I scan who is playing just to go check out their stuff online. I developed the list off friends' tour schedules.
eddies attic (ga), blue door (okla) Passim (boston area)
Swallow hill (my local listening room)

I have been involved with the Folk Scene for about 6 years now. There are some rabid fans. I would not call myself a "Star" though. I am a lowly bass player but I have enjoyed the shows and folks I have met.

That's what I'm shooting for. I love rock and acoustic folk, but rock is just too hard a scene to break into. I'm gonna make my name in folk, then hopefully pull a band together and do some rock too. I write a lot, and within a couple of years I'm gonna get out on the road, playing anywhere and everywhere I can, festivals, coffeehouses, the street corner... maybe I'll see some of you out there. I never mind singing with a partner...
