Pardon for asking, but are there any notable female rappers on the charts? It seems to be a very male-dominated genre, more so than any other genre of music. Why? .
There's a few around - Lady Sovereign, M.I.A, Missy Elliot, Ladi 6 to name a few. I don't really listen to enough rap or hip hop to know why there's not many females though - I guess maybe some songs are a bit misogynistic, like more than in other genres? You wouldn't really get a girlie rapping about bitch slappin' & hos, women in rap vids are usually just standing by a pool shaking booty. It's not an easy world for a woman to break into I guess. Sigh. It's a pity there's not more exposure for the girls though, - ladi 6, lady sov and MIA are all quite good.
Are there any satirical female rappers? That might make for a good novelty artist (much like Wierd Al) or a good comedy sketch. It would be backwards to the conventional themes in male-dominated rap. For the limited female rappers out there, are their themes more optimistic or do they pretty much do the same pessimistic type themes of mainstream rap? .
there are plenty of ill female rappers lady of rage, Gangsta boo, remy martin, chyna whyte ect.... just cuz they not on the charts dont mean they dont exist
The question really should be, Are there any notable rappers on the charts? So much of the rap is dumbed down casio beats and Dr. Seuss wit gold teef rhymes. Rah's a better MC, Missy is an infinitely more creative and better artist.
I know female rapper that is really highly skilled. I inserted a video at the bottom of my french rap story page. Enjoy Toolisto a.k.a Daddy The Pimp http://www.daddythepimp.com/realhiphop.html
lil kim is probably the most lyrical mainstream rapper. remy ma is lyrical too. jean grae is a good underground rapper that doesnt talk about the typical mainstream bullshit.
They could at least change the tempo once in a while or the time signature. Why not try 6/8 or shuffle or something other than the same straight boring same-tempo 4/4. It's like eating baloney sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. And people used to say disco was bad. .
Jean Grae is where its at for female MC's. edit: never mind. I don't llike her solo stuff much. She has some nice verses on tracks with Rhyme Sayers and that crowd though.
Funny, there used to be many more in the late 80's early 90's. Salt and Pepa, Queen Latifa, Yo-Yo, MC Lite, 357, ...many more. Da Brat was okay.
