I just printed off my two-week notice for my icky corporate job and I have never felt so light and down right airy. I just couldn't put up with the corporate BS anymore and couldn't in all consciousness sell things to people that I KNEW KNEW KNEW would be hurting them. Anybody else here have a similar experience? Anybody got any suggestions for new ways to make a living (hey I'm not trying to get rich but once whatever I have now has run out I will need rent)? Ahhh I am so perky right now.... Peace!! and Pouring tears of Joy!
feels like playing hooky, doesn't it? I enjoyed my letters of notice greatly! Make sure you get any accrued vacation due you paid!
i've never had a corporate anything, but i almost did..i've alwagys tried livin job free, i made jewlery for a number of years and done other things workin for myself over the years what do u enjoy doin? damn..i forgot to say congrats!!! good for you!..yea i never could do he corporate thing..and im soooooooooooooooo glad i never got stuck in that in any way
Thanks very much for the concern and yeah it does feel a little like playing hooky. However I am not imporatant enough to them to be getting paid vacation (I work... oh wait now I get to say workED by the hour). And in case I forget to say it later Drumminmama your picture/sig is very pretty.
Eagle, everyone here will probably think I am insane but I really do enjoy cleaning and well I like sewing but I am doubting my ability to make a living off those things. (I am a sophomore in college and I will only have more and more work the closer I get to graduating). I really admire you for consicously avaoiding corporate america.. I didn't realize the degree of hypocrisy involved in the whole thing. I have spoken with one of my friends about applying to work in like a Mom-and-pop restaurant whenever I move back home. I think I would be okay with that. Anyone with any experience in the food industry (esp. waitresses?)
especialy with school..you can set your own hours..clean a few houses or so..make clothing.. maybe get a few ppl together to get your own lil part time cleanin company..offer your services around campus even..whenever i need $ i think of workin for myself 1st b4 id ever think of workin for someone else..
Yeah, housecleaners can make $10 an hour or more, depending on the area you live in...you may want to check your local newspaper for ads for housecleaning to see what the "going rate" is...also, there are some folks over in the fashion and crafts forum that do sewing for a living...I think some of them do it full time. If you haven't looked there already, you may want to check it out. Congratulations to you!!
Today is my last day at a multinational www.huawei.com is where i worked, I lest because all i did during 6 months was click a fucking mouse... I can do so much more, and that really frustrates me !!!! I also feel the lightness from finally making the move !! Lets hope for better days !! Rock n“Roll !!!
what's the college degree, then? What do you want to do with its skills? I'm at a "corporate" paper, but that is a legal structure for potecting investor assets. Def not the worker bees'! I've worked directly for the owners twice and for a company three times. It all depends of the person in charge where I am as to which style is better. I was able to make greater changes to the second owner-run paper as he was the sole owner. (The other was three siblings) However, the family corporation (paper founded in 1903, run by the fam as a big corp) was pretty low pressure as long as you produced stories on time. No one really noted if they were the best or worst you'd done. That paper gave me a raise at six months, and I handed in a letter of resignation effective at the end of the summer.
It has been nearly 30 years since my last traditional 40 hour a week employment. For many years I had tried to work at various available jobs, (dentists, optometrists, trucking companies, retail stores, restaurants etc.) and I would just sit there and feel spaced out, not quite engaged or interested enough to be in the here and now. Most of the time I witnessed injustices and malpractices wherever I worked. One thing led to another as I was unable to support my current lifestyle (living in a rental situation). What now.???? First came apple picking, which gave my partner and I the freedom to travel and work on our own in the orchards. We sought out communal living and lived at several small communities that we found in The Communities Directory. We lived on organic farms, where we worked in the gardens in exchange for residence. WE helped take care of animals and grounds for a cattle rancher, and lived in a pseudo LOVE community for 2 years and made wool felted mats. We "squatted" on county property in the woods for 13 years, living in tents with no electricy or any other utilities. We now live in a schoolbus on some land in a rural setting and act as caretakers for low rent, and maintainance of the property. So...... My partner and I currently support our simple lifestyle with a small business I recently strarted, where I sell crochet hats in a nearby town, and attend craft shows etc. There are five or six stores so far that support local artisans, and they have been responsive to carrying my hats. It is a small income , sporadic according to the season, but I have found it is a practical item to market ( everyone has a head), and am having fun and feel more fullfilled with this source of income than I have been in a long time. Of course if you want a life without having to do or sell things you don't approve of , or enjoy giving your precious days on this earth to, then it is necessary to simplify and reduce your consumerism, and be happy to move a little outside the mainstream, after all isn't that the original hippy idealism.???
I lasted 2 years in the corporate scene, working 60 hours a week having to wear a tye and polished shoes everyday. It sucked the life out of me. I often wonder if the stress actually took years off my life. I swore never again to put myself in that position. I still work for someone but its a laid back gig doing something i enjoy, while at the same time learning a trade. I've been working for a general contractor for the past 5 years and love working with my hands. The ultimate goal is to be in business for myself, which looks like it may happen in the near future.
