Hello, can you help me research into the names of underground titles of the sixties. Do you know why their creators chose those following names (for a start): The Rag, The Blue Bus, Brown Shoes, The Chicago Seed, Raisin Bread, Candle, The Cauldron? Tex
Perhaps "Brown Shoes" came from the Frank Zappa song-- "brown shoes don't make it, quit school, why fake it?"
On this side of the pond we had things like Oz, It and Ink. "Oz" is short for Australia, homeland of editor Richard Neville; IT was for "International Times", and had a picture on the masthead of Clara Bow, the original "It girl".
You should look for a book called The Paper Revolutionaries-The rise of the underground press, by Larry Leamer, published in 1972. It's been out of print for a long time but is a common item in the used books on Amazon.com. It should answer a lot of your questions about the underground press in the 60's and early 70's.
