Hey, I was just wondering how many people have hitchhiked recently. I would like to know how easy it is to thumb your way across America, and if anyone had any tips/suggested supplied, it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone know a good amount of money to bring along?

I've done a few short hops - want to head out on an extended trip.

we picked up some kids who had made it a point to hitchike across and only bring $6 each just to prove it could be done
they went from colorado to florida and back over a faitly long period (ithink they just wandered semi randomly) for like3 months, and hardly spent anything
so it all depends on your needs isupose
goin alone tho isnt always safe..but its not that dificult except some areas

Where ar ethe best places to hitch a ride (i.e. the edge of town, near a gas station, downtown, etc.)? Also, how much clothing is essential? A few pair of pants, shirts, and a jacket? More or less? I'd say I wouldn't be on the road for more than two months the first time. I'm just looking to test the waters before I can comfortably say that I am trying to go coast to coast across America.

Laramie huh? Not much going on in that town. I like it cause it's so laid back and small, good for the soul. I spent a few nights there once. Heh, the spirits of the Lakota are with you there.

Well if you're gonna hitch in Laramie depending on which way you're going would be on the exit ramp of I-80. Took soaring-eagle 4 days so it looks pretty grim, I took a greyhound bus outta there. If you're gonna be hitchin in Laramie bring a hat, sunglasses and water that Wyoming sun can disorient you and play tricks on your mind.

if you want to cover a lot of ground at a time, try truck stops. It might take longer to catch a ride there, but the distance that ride will take you is usually pretty immense.

stick your thumb in the air,
    smile,
    now a peace sign,
hey, your good at this, youll be a pro in no time,

hungry? spange, dumpster dive, fly a sign, go to a feed
Thirsty? water is all over, have your bottle handy,

clothes? depends on weather, 3 undies less you like freeballin, 4 socks, 2 pants, one shorts, 3-4 t shirts, 1 sweater, 1 hoodie, raincoat, hat and gloves depending
    sleeping bag
    pack
    knife
boots, gore tex is good but kinda hi tech, maybe sandals too,
    tarps or tent,
    rope,
blissware, (spoon, dish/bowl/pan, whatever you prefer)

If you get into a bad situation, just keep moving, dont get stuck in the drama,
look out for perverts and psychos,
stay away from hard drugs and drinking all day every day,

Dead on ramp? this is where it can be handy to have a good map, look for the next on ramp, is it walking distance? 2-7 miles, start walking, dont stand on the interstates, that will draw the cops out, just walk,
Most times your better off staying on the on ramps,

not on the interstate? hitch on the far sides of town, trying to catch a ride 1 mile in front of a town can be hard, most people are locals and most likely going into town, get to the other side and youll catch people coming outta town and going through.

Keep your camp stealth, wait till dark, look for nooks and crannys of woods and fields, when you slip behind the veil, try and do it when no/few cars are going by, camp in low foot traffic areas, places with no garbage, go to bed after dark and get up at sunrise, behind stores, side of the road, hilltops. ridges, ditches, gullies, etc. make sure the place isnt already occupied.

make sure the peeps can pull over semi safely, 55mph? get on a long straight stretch, give the cars time to see you and time to pull over,

fastest way to move- Interstate, stick to busy places with fast food, truck stops and gas, places where people who are traveling will stop off for a bite, to refuel or to take a leak, check with the driver and your map, make sure your not getting dropped off in the middle of nowhere,

    Dont panic,

    dont open the wrong door,
