I'll be in Amsterdam for the first time during New Year's. If anybody could give me an idea about what to expect during the winter months and if there are any specific New Year celebrations / parties I should be aware of I'd appreciate it. I'm eager to visit the many coffee shops but I'm also interested in trying some alternative drugs other than marijuana such as mushrooms and lsd. From what I've heard these are legal and can sometimes be found in coffeeshops. Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks

Just stay away from Dam Square unless you've got cover.

Looks to me like a free for all and the fireworks are blazing like heavy fire. No respect for 1st degree burns.

Otherwise looks like a grande time... See Below:

Coffeeeshops only sell cannabis products, for the most part. Some coffeeshops still have alcohol (but not for much longer) and a very few coffeeshops have mushroom tea. Other "tolerated" soft drugs are Mushrooms (at least 7 different types), Peoyte, Salvia Divinorum, Nitrous Oxide and a whole slew of sexual and energy enhancing herbs. These other soft drugs can be bought at one of the many Smartshops in Amsterdam and through out Holland. Most of the shrooms are sold fresh only. The dried ones have been banned from being sold, due to them being stronger than fresh. But it doesnt mean that you can't find dried ones. ;) Peace.

Coffeeshops sell only marijuana/hash. A few sell space food. Some also sell alcohol. No coffeeshops sell any form of mushrooms including tea. Mushrooms are sold only at smart shops. Dried mushrooms were not banned due to them being stronger. All drugs except marijuana/hash and fresh mushrooms are illegal and considered hard drugs in the Netherlands.

Here are some links to smart shops:

New Years Eve is a great experience in Amsterdam. It's legal for individuals to set off many types of fireworks only during this time of year in the Netherlands.

I've heard of nitrous oxide, I just wasn't aware it was available in Amsterdam. How does that work, you walk in a smartshop, ask for a hit and they give you a mask?
