    Hey Mike!
Nice thing you decided to drop by Vietnam.
Let's see. From Hanoi, you can start off by visitting Sapa, which is a small town on one of the highest mountaon top in VN. Not the perfect place to spend in the winter, but it's got nice view though. Next, you might wanna stop by Halong and spend at least 2D1N there. Take one of those popular boat ride around the bay. This just might be the place you would want to propose to your fiance'(that is, if you haven't got a wife already).
The ancient city of Hue is also a must on your journey. Hue used to be the palace of the last kings of Vietnam. near Hue is the small town of Hoi An. This is probably the most well-preserved ancient town in Vietnam. And if you're in luck, you could find yourself in on of the many festivalsin Hoi An while you're there.
Going futher south, you could pass by Nha Trang beach. Absolutely beautiful sea that you could take a dive in in December. Water there is warm for most of the year.
Going still further south, and you reach Hochiminh City, the largest metropolitan area of Vietnam(though Hanoi isn't much smaller). There are lots of musseums, historical landmarks, lakes there. But what ever you do, do NOT forget to try out the food( the same goes when you're in Hanoi).
As you may have realized, I've listed the most popular attractions of the three main parts of VN: North, Middle, South. Along the way from North to South, there are many other small but interesting places you visit. Also, as this is a North-South trip, The train is the most suitable form of transport.
And that's it! Oh BTW, you can shorten your order to 'bia' which, guess what, pronounces 'beer'. CHeers! And welcome to Vietnam!!!

No, been to Lao, Cambodia, Thailand, but missed out on nam.

That said it's my final destination for my next trip. I'm heading very gradually east for Hanoi from India. When I get to Hanoi i'm going to have a little think what to do with the remaining amount of money I will have left. I may well try landing a job teaching English depending on many factors such as a.) if i can be bothered b.) if I can actually blag a job without a TEFL c.) if I actually like Hanoi enough to live there for a while...But as it stands i'll be there probably late 2007 early 2008...maybe...

Heard about the snake in a bottle...Don't know about the psychedelic properties...just been told it's really nasty strong alcohol!

Anyway enjoy your trip, sure you'll love it, heard vietnam is extremely easy to travel so will be great first trip for you!

You can find that drink everywhere in Vietnam. Also with scorpions inside. And other animals.
The smell is terrible, but the taste is just that of a cheap alcoholic drink.

Most people buy the Open Tour Ticket and go from either Hanoi to HCM or vice versa. That way you can be sure to visit all the touristy places. The bus stops wherever you want and you can get in whenever you want.

Also I recommend Sapa, it is north of Hanoi and not on the way. Worth a visit though, the surroundings are very beautiful.
