if you already know this please don't reply, A father and son are travelling in a car together when they crash, The father is killed instantly The son is taken to hospital The doctor comes to see him and says "oh my god that's my son" WHO IS THE DOCTOR?
yes you're right but you're not s'posed to get it straight away, ok how about this one clever clogs a man walking along a road comes to a split in it, one route leads to certain death, the other life, at the entrance to each split road is a phoenix guarding the way, one phoenix always tells the truth, the other always lies. you are allowed to ask ONE phoenix only ONE question to enable you to find the route to life, what question do you ask to which phoenix?
what will that prove, you still won't know which road to take, it doesn't follow the the phoenix that is lying necessarily guards the road to death, try again
okay then heres a full step by step answer I approach to a PHX and ask whether the other PHX is PHX or not. The answer would determine the lying PHX. Then I would ask the other PHX (knowing it's the truth teller or the lyer) the way. a) If it is the lyer PHX, I would take the road that it says leads me to death. b) If it is the true teller PHX then I would take the road that it says would take me to life. Note: I'm not violating the times I can ask questions bcuz I ask each PHX only 1 question. more riddles pls! (sorry if this is a duplicate post, browser's back button)
That solution doesn't work because you are asking two questions. Read the riddle again it says you can only ask one. The question to ask is "What would the other Pheniox say if I asked him which path was the right way?"
no, if you ask "What would the other Pheniox say if I asked him which path was the right way?" the PHX can lie and you wouldnt know if it is true or not. in the riddle it says: "you are allowed to ask ONE phoenix only ONE question" I'm asking one PHX, one question. I'm not asking 2 questions to the same PHX. each PHX, is asked only 1 question.
OK, OK, I happen to know this puzzle very well. You are allowed to ask one question full stop. You do not know which Phoenix is the truthful one and which is the liar, all you know is that the one ALWAYS lies and one ALWAYS tells the truth. So there are two possible solutions: One is to ask a phoenix "If I were to ask the other Phoenix which path I should take, which one would he tell me to take?". A lying Phoenix would tell you to take the incorrect path, and so the truthful phoenix (if it is that one that you are asking) will relate this truthfully and so point out the wrong path. And you can just take the other path. A truthful Phoenix would tell you to take the correct path, so if you are asking the lying Phoenix, the lying Phoenix will then lie about this answer and tell you to take the incorrect path. And so you should take the other path. This means that it doesn't matter which Phoenix you ask as the end result is the same. Now there is also another solution. If you approach either Phoenix and ask "If I were to ask you which path to take, which path would you recommend", first of all, a truthful Phoenix would recommend to you the correct path, and so would point this out when answering your question. A lying Phoenix would recommend the incorrect path, but because the lying Phoenix lies, it lies in its answer and points out the correct path. Either way, the Phoenix will tell you the correct path. Just to complicate things further, there is an alternative version of this puzzle in which there are Three Phoenixes. One who always tells the truth, one who always lies, and one who tells the truth some times, and other times will lie. In this case you have to ask "If I were to ask you is this the correct path, and you said yes, would your answer have the same amount of truthfulness as your answer to this question?". And again, all the positives and negatives iron themselves out
Couldn't I just ask a simple question like "What colour shirt am I wearing?". The lying Pheonix would give an incorrect answer, would they not?
It doesn't matter, whichever path the Pheniox says is the wrong path. And it's not "the PHX can lie", either the PHX always lies, or never does. If it's the truth teller, he'll say what the liar would say, so you take the other path. If it's the liar, he'll tell you the opposite of what the truth teller would say, so you take the other path. And no, it doesn't say you can ask each PHX one question. It says you can only ask ONE question to ONE PHX.
Well let's be honest they weren't going to get it. A couple of posts ago you still had someone thinking it was enough to work out which phoenix was the liar and not bother finding out which path to take!
