Sometimes I wonder about people and their computers... Just a minute ago I had this conversations on MSN: (18:25:57) (L)Emily(L): my computer wont let me get on the internet 4 sum reason (18:26:14) Krystyl: but you're using MSN....o_o;; (18:26:19) (L)Emily(L): i know (18:26:26) (L)Emily(L): i dont need internet 2 use that Well I guess that's feasible if her computer is sending messages through the spiritual protocal, but most computers have yet to harness that ability. In another conversation with another friend she asked me if she could save her documents on a CD-R. I asked her if she had a CD burner (her computer was very old) and she said no. I paused and said, "You do know that your CD drive is read only right?" She responds with a yes so I mentioned that Read Only drives can READ ONLY, they can't write. So is it just me or does the general public lack in computer common sense?
Its a bit like someone I know - they are totally confused by what is, or isnt, windows so when she phone me to say windows isnt working she usually means "office XP". I can be driven almost to violence by computer illiterates especially if they dont at least attempt a solution to a minor problem before calling me. someone called me to say the mouse was broken, I knew it just needed cleaning so I told them how to do it (before optical mice were invented) anyway a week later I was at their offce and they had bought new mouse they couldnt work out how to unscrew a plastic ring to releae the ball I can remember at the time thinking - For some reason if people cant read we think they are backward - but if a person cant use a computer effectively, we see that as alright because someone else will fix it for you - but I think the two are about equal
This is the reason I only lasted two weeks as an inbound DSL tech. I really need someone to have a functional level of computer literacy to have a conversation that didn't make me feel like slapping anyone.
