My scoliosis was first noticed in middle school... I was braced... my curve was never fixed but supposedly was kept from getting worse.... now im 22 and my back has been hurting increadbly bad like piercing pain in my ribs right below my right shoulder blade and my ribs in general hurt my hip pops out of place when i walk and My back is always achy... anyway... I Have an appointment with my surgeon on October 23 to see whats going on. (not to have surgery you see an orthopedic surgeon for severe scoliosis... I was just wondering if anyway else has scoliosis and how to deal with the pain? I dont really want to take painkillers... but its been so bad I dont wnat to move and it gets bad enough that I throw up... Does anyone have tips to get through the pain until I can see a doctor? Thanks!
get yourself to a chiropractor stat! I had bad scoliosis, nothing like what you're describing, but bad enough to have pain a lot of the time that was affecting me everyday. I started going to a chiropractor and within a year and a half it was completely gone, and I barely ever have pain anymore. my only caution is, make sure you research which chiros in your area are focused on healing, not just getting you in there for life to make money.
Thanks for the advice... glad that your back is feeling better... mine is pretty severe though so I think I am going to wait to here from my surgeon before seeing anyone else... juyst to make sure it is safe for my back... Thanks though!
Wish I could help you out. I also have scoliosis, but not nearly as bad as you have it seems. There have been times where I couldn't get out of bed or tie my own shoes, but yours sounds a lot worse. For me, yoga seems to help if it isn't horrible pain, when it gets worse I have to deal with taking pain killers and muscle relaxers to get through. Maybe a good stretch could help... not sure. Good luck.
thank you... Yeah curling up in a ball and laying my my knees actually helps a lot... Thank goodness my apointment is on monday and I can at least see what my next step in getting relief is.
Sometimes to get to sleep (nighttime seems the worst with my back) I will sit cross legged and bend over my legs... I look like a pretzel and always wake up with my legs asleep, but it ends up being a really good stretch for my back, when I can do it. Good luck with your appointment!
Well I went to the surgeon today. My curve has increased about 10 degrees from 30 degrees to 40.9 degrees and thatsin my lower spine. He said this is a pretty bad concern and this is when you need to start worrying about it. Im supposed to go back in about 6 months to a year to see what the increase in my spine is and if it has increased about 5 to 10 degrees I will need a spinal fusion. He also said that it will most likely increase a lot. He gave me a script for physical therapy which doesnt decrease the curve but should decrease the pain. just thought I would give it update. thanks guys!
I'm 42 now and have had scoliosis since I was about 11 yrs old. I wore a back brace all during high school but it obviously didn't work because my back is still messed up. I've heard yoga helps...if you don't wait till you're to old.
Squakers: a back brace isnt supposed to make your spine straigther it just keeps it from getting worse. And yoga does work for pain im going to start doing that as soon as my physical thearpist tells me what kind I should do. but alas the only thing that can straighten your spine is surgery.
i have very mild scoliosis that developed when i was 15...pretty sure from a period of inactivity. the mucles in my back started to degenerate and nothing is holding my spine up properly. although mild, it's still enough to cause me constant pain to some degree.I've learned to live with it. once i build my muslces up again my spine should straighten itself out. It is nothing like yours though...i can't imagine how awful that is!
paperdoll: Living in constant pain sucks like that... I dont think that inactivity would cause scoliosis, its the way your spine grows. Hope you start feeling better soon
