Hello to everybody! My boyfriend and I am considering to move from Palma de Mallorca to Amsterdam. Who needs sun if you can get coffee shops? What is living there like? How are payments and rents? Could you give us some advises? And if somebody knows a cheap way to transport our stuff over to Holland, that would be great also. Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks in advance! Lisa
i hope you havent moved yet. have you ever visited there. unless your a professional occupation your not moving to amsterdam ever! i tried to move there myself --first you cant get a bank account with out an address(which means you cant get money from wire transfers so you have bring all your money and carry it with you the whole time your living there). second you cant get an address without the goverments approval. so you end up sub leaseing an apartment illegally. third you cant find a job unless its illegal. which will never even pay your rent. the only job i have found that pays enough to pay rent is in the music industry. which again is off and on they dont like outsiders taking to much of the work. so unless your a music proformer or in a band. there is very little chance your ever gonna last more than a couple months. and dont even think you will work at burger king or fast food. they wont hire illigal workers and it wouldnt even pay the rent. by the way it costs 700 to 1000 euros to sub lease an apartment for a month. its a great city but people from the eu cant even jobs most of the time. and there suppose to be able to find jobs anywhere in eu for a legal wage. so unless your from the eu dont even chance it, unless your rich even then you will be illegal, and have to carry all your money with you.
We're not in Holland yet. We want to be prepared before we leave everything in Palma. We are EU-members, so there is no need to work illegal. I read on the web all I have to do is go to the police and register myself. Then I have 3 months to find a job and then I can stay as long as I want. Are the rents so high, even if I would live a bit outside from Amsterdam? I don't have to live in the town-center. I would prefer to live on the edge of the city.
well if your are an eu member, your almost in---you should find a job to sponser you before go(thats easier said then done.) i had no idea where that city was?(palma de mallorca) more than likely you have to live outside of amsterdam. but they have the trams and can walk most places in amsterdam because its so small. now your biggest problem will be finding an apartment. what i was told is that it takes months for the goverment assign you an apartment, but once they do you only pay like $500 euros a month.(its not in the town center either) im telling just be warned that amsterdam says there at full capasity. also in amsterdam almost 90% speak perfect english. the younger the better there english is. you could be a waitress (what kind of work are you gonna find) well since your from the eu i cant help you---youre miles ahead of where i was. since i was illegal the whole time i lived there. i just know that an average joe from outside the eu doesnt stand a chance living in amsterdam unless a job sponsers them.
It doesnt matter that youre eu citizens that entitles you to travel to holland without restrictions only. within 7 days of arriving you have to register through the police station andauthority, you have to have a address to register or else you then have to go underground. as for an address try www.elynx.nl look for notices and accomadation offered but it is usually for singles but much cheaper then rentingyour own apartment, that starts at about 950 euros a month with first months payment and a deposit so a total of 2000 euros. as for work it is very difficult to find. perhaps you should just go for a few months and share a rentd apartment to see how you get on. good luck and if you succeed you can accomadate me next time im in adam.
