Sadly, my G4 powerbook hard drive has crashed. And I had very important documents on the HD. Which I never backed up. Yes, I am dumb. Apple told me there's a company in Cali that retrieves data from crashed hard drives but they are very expnsive - they told me it will cost between $500 and $3000 for my little 40 gig HD. No way! But I do need these files....Is there any way that I might be able to enter my HD through some other means? I mean, my computer for whatever reason cannot read it, but maybe another can? Any ideas? This is very important to me, but I haven't thousands of dollars to send it away to Cali.

Everyone - Back up your files, DAMMIT!

    Got any nerd friends?

my laptop crashed a while ago and one of my nerd friends (ok bf at the time) recovered it with some sort of data recovery disk he had, something called windows pe loaded up with data recover programs. No clue how it worked personally, but if you have any friends in IT or of a nerdy variety they might have some suggestions

I would have thought that a computer specialist should be able to retrieve the files on your HDD but I think that might be expensive.. Whats with people and Macs? PC's are mainstream and easier to fix

What is the name brand and model of the drive? There are ways to extract data if there wasn't a physical catastrophe...i.e. heads dumping into the platters...etc.
