The sticky threads at the top of this forum do a great job of providing basic information. They also provide quite a few references as well. I'd give them a look. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'm still learning myself.

^^A wonderful and large community of a very diverse cross-section of buddhists, non-buddhists and everyone in between. A few western monks. A few non-western monks. Generally just a great bunch of people who you'll learn a lot from.

I always read too much into words and questions so I would probably have a hard time truthfully answering. I took the test and came out 83% Buddhist while on another test I came out 98% Buddhist.

Part of the problem with language is that there is an appeal made to common ideas which the hearer may not subscribe to, assumption is appealed to. For example, when they ask your opinion on whether one believes or disbelieves that "Jesus is God," it makes the assumption that one is speaking from a Christian perspective. (Well, duh, you'll say. Okay, then where are the Satanist questions if there is a catagory for it?) One who identifies oneself as a Gnostic may very well have a definition which is both con & pro (at the same time) to what Christians believe, it hinges on his definition of "God".

So one can think one thing and say another because the other's idea of the same word is different. That is why the language of the mystic is hard to understand - they use the same words but have different meanings.
