I got this idea around the time of 9-11. At the time most fights were canceled I could not help but notice how blue the sky got. I pointed it out to anyone who would listen and look. I would like to suggest we assign one day each year where all planes and vehicles of all kinds were banned from running all arounf the world. I know it do help so much, What do ya'll think?
If only this could occur... Here in Montreal we have one day each year when the government (municipal) suggests to not take your car... but since it's only a suggestion, not a law, (plus half of the people don't even know about it) nobody makes the effort... It would take a green party to order such thing, I think... but by the time it's elected I hope there will still be some blue in the sky...
(((Any Color))) What date is it that this is supposed to happen? I would like to post it(the date) on my blog. Thanx for your reply...
In Montreal it was 22 septembre in 2006, but I'm not sure if it'll be the same next year thought. http://www.amt.qc.ca/comm/enville06/ The website is in French, but there a section entitled "english information" you can find in it.
i would love it if people did this. especially if it were more than once a day. i'm absolutely fed up with cars and traffic.
I think the day that you are referring to is "World Car-Free Day". It's fairly popular in Europe. I don't think it is extended to airlines though.
Thanx!! for that info oilfreeand happy. I went to their web site. I want to make an effort to get it started in my town.
grew up within sight of 1..i mean far off u could see tthe towers...and always felt like i was livin in the shadow of doom....and we were miles away lets extend it to power 1 day of global power off...would make all the difference...electric..vehicles..work...everything just stopped for 1 day but would it be enough?
It is a start. At my restaurant I have started giving all pedestrians and cyclist a 10% discount and I will be sponcering a bike rodeo this spring. Think global act locally!! Taking mass transit is a start instead of driving everywhere. The new buses in my town are electric. Many cities are going green...
I haven't visited in a long time but, with summer months and lots of people traveling the air quality has taken a dive in my city. Many days this summer people with lung problems have been urged to stay indoors. I keep hoping to see new technologies in alternative energy take a front row to the gas guzzling fume emitting vehicles we have on the roads today. The public must demand this if any real change is to take place...
I'd vote for it, one huge "bank holiday" type thing. I think that's more viable that Gore's Global Warming crap, and would probably save more emissions in the long run.
This thread is NOT ABOUT AL GORE! YOU ARE OFF-TOPIC bringing his name up here. ENOUGH PROPAGANDA. You are hereby warned. Please read the sticky at the top of this forum.
I think the logistics of a world wide day w/o emissions is probably not going to happen. Think of the comeback to vegetarian activists: "for every animal you don't eat, I'll eat three." provocative , insulting and sending the most I Don't Care message possible, but we have lots of these contrarians on our earth. I know people who would drive JUST BECAUSE there was a no-drive day. then the off gridders/ self-generators would become "the elite" in anti- ecological parlance. "The rich crunchy yuppies with solar panels, who will still have power to their homes, are behind all this." Also, as with no buy days, no-fly or no-drive could simply result in HIGHER emissions on the days flanking it. Now to generate a feeling that one should and could easily go emissions free for a couple days per year, that could get a groundswell of change going. (and now my only partially related comment: get rid of driving as sport: NASCAR, NHRA etc and reduce LOTS of emissions.)
I ask that people who think this topic is a good idea to discuss it with friends and also to pray about it. The more we bring it up the more likely it can happen. I like blue skies and fresh air so much. One day a year from the whole world is a lot to ask for I know. I intend to keep asking until it happens. Let's all keep asking and help our numbers to grow.
This is a great idea. Imagine, if this could happen, may be people will see how beautiful this planet is and they will stop polluting it.
With the anniversary of 911 coming up I want to bring this back up because I think 9-11 would be the best day to remember about pollution. I don't forget it is yo mama's idea...
