I am taking a surreal film course and we just watched the French film The City of Lost Children. Anyone seen it? Sorry if this thread already exists, I didn't see one : )
I love, love this film! Such a surreal world where a mad scientist attempts to steal the dreams of little children. The same ppl that produced Amelie are behind it and it's one of my top 5 all time favorite movies! Two thumbs up!
It's such a terribly odd film. I enjoyed watching it a great deal, and I think it's a wonderful piece of cinema, but it's never one that I'll rewatch just for grins. I prefer much fluffier items to revisit. Still, it's a wonderfully extreme and thought-provoking film. Oh, and not to ruin the thread, but I have to admit I liked Ron Perlman in Hellboy much more.
don't forget to mention wonderful cgi effects (do you realize they in some sort of way blue screened everybodies faces in this movie and then used a computer to color everybodies faces in making them look more surreal?) or the wonderful wardrobe and costume design work of Jean Paul Gottiet (sp?) or Ron Pearlman learning French for this part and speaking it perfectly! these are just the quirky reasons why this movie is fantastic. its one of my favorite foreign films along with layer cake and city of god.
What a fantastic sounding course. What other films are you watching? Any Gondry, Gilliam or Kusturica?
yeah we've watched Gilliam and are set for Gondry in a few weeks. we've watched some David Lynch, Coen brothers, and Russ Meyer. It's a surreal/outsider film course so russ meyer fits in the outsider category, while Gilliam is more surreal.
Honestly I don't enjoy his stuff either. I do appreciate it though and watch his stuff from that point of view. I know I'm gonna hate the movie or short film or whatever but I appreciate its context and whatnot.
DELICATESSEN and AMELIE same director:Jean Pierre Jeunet. As fun as strange as The City of The lost children(DELICATESSEN)
if your goal posting that snyde remark was to get somebody else to post one, you've succeeded.......screw you rigamarole
haven't seen Amelie but I did enjoy delicatessen. A bit slow, but decent. City of Lost Children is still tops on my list for Jeunet.
i loved the three brothers in the movie! or were they clones? i dont really remember its been a while since ive seen it...
