Hey.. I was just thinking something..

When someone does something brave (like someone who rescues a kid from a burning building or a dog that is drowning in the river), they usually get some media attention for there deeds.

My tought is, that by giving heroes like that special attention, people get to think that it's out of the ordinary to help others. Maybe the media shouldn't focus to much on them (although they deserve it) but focus on things where noone intervened (like a kid that got beaten up in public with noone helping) and emphasing that it's not normal when things like that happen. Or.. would that have the same effect.. would people think that it's common practise that nobody gets help?

    Confusing!

    What do you guys think?

I suppose if there was a situation where no-one helped it would never come to the media's attention i guess, cos the guilty party obviously wouldnt be saying anything, and the victim would have no-one to thank and praise!

And with modern thinking seemingly the way it is, with people generally thinking of themselves rather than others, people wouldnt read about a story with no hero or noteable villain, making it un-newsworthy.

Thats probably a sad reflection of todays society i'm afraid *gets violin out*

have you read any newspapers or seen the news at all? They have sad stories where a kid gets shot, a guy is killed in Iraq, all the time and sadly, nobody does anything about those type of stories, they only say "Aww, thats sad" and move on.

I disagree. When one person does something heroic, it often encourages people to help others. It's like an inspiration; Many heroes are idols for kids as well as adults, and can help spread the idea or helping others who need it.

I have to agree with Sunburst here. We already see so much crap about people doing bad things. It's nice to know there are a few good ones out there.

i once saved a kid from drowning when i was 9 ... the life gaurd was chatting with friends and not paying attention

    i got the hero treatment
but also the place i was at figured out that they nedded 2 lifeguards who are attentive...insted of 1 who doesnt pay attention

so me saving the kid made a diffrence and maybe saved even more lives

Thats a different issue tho really.

For instance, theres just been some major floods in the south of England this week and in the papers yesterday was a 'hero' who had rescued 9 people from the water. The guy was able to cos he was a surfer and therefore a strong swimmer. Hes been on all the front pages and is expected to be up for a bravery award. This is a great example of a hero who hasn't asked for praise, but is rightly getting it for being strong and brave in a difficult situation.

This can only be a good thing., and is a great example to others.
