WEll we ARE on a forum that's big on psychedelia, so yeah...

What do you consider psychedelic metal bands, albums or songs?

    Some of mine are...
    Burzum
    Xasthur
    Drudkh
Fanisk (very little known (NS) black metal band from the states, check it out.
    Lunar Aurora
    Blut Aus Nord
Darkthrone (esp. the album Transilvanian hunger
    Shape of Despair
Solefald (weird complex 'post-black' as they call it, if Pink Floyd were a metal band it would be this. Actually I don't like Floyd but I love this!)
Some Judas Iscariot (In the valley of death..., An eternal kingdom of fire)

So most of it is repetitive ambient black metal.

    So how about you?

I guess I end up naming doom/stoner bands like Electric Wizard and Sleep. I could say Summoning, early Kovenant (Covenant) and Keep of Kalessin but I don't really consider that to be psychedelic.
Oh wait! You have to check out Ancient - Mad grandiose bloodfiends! Atmospheric black metal and the production isn't to great (no or little bass), but it has some truely brilliant lyrics and songs. Check out especially songs like The draining, Willowthewisp and A mad blood scenario for the psychedelic part, but I'm fond on the whole album (Vampirizing Natasha is probably my fav).

    A mad blood scenario:

Gaze into my broken eyes where laughter and sorrow collide
Scattered are the pieces which time forgot
See the cracked mirror walls, emerald mist flowing down the halls
Shattered pieces of a forgotten puzzle
feel the shaking of my room, welcome to my most humble tomb
Lay your head upon the crimson velvet pillow
Relax as I tell you a tale when lunacy reigned and madness prevailed
Longnailed fingers run through silken hair
Our poison tongues now dance, wet with entrancing liqueurs
We drown in burning ecstacy but you seek something more than this
Tonight another looking glass will crack
My promises too broken, did you believe what I've spoken
The echoes shall splinter your mind like they did mine
Prepare my darling, for the nocturnal wedding

Gaze into my broken eyes where a deranged love rises
    To greet your lovelorn flesh
    Hallucinating like undead shamans
You feel the rapturous sting of first death and collapse into lonely arms
Look now with night piercing eyes
Not quite broken but time shall remedy
Lick my blood-soaked lips once more, taste the stain of wondrous insanity
The constant shrieking in your mind drives you crazy
Yes, my darling, I can hear it too
The answers you seek lie in the reflection
Be still, allow the images to caress you
    Here everything is upside down
Cackling like undead hyenas, you feel the boggling slap of dementia
    And collapse into delighted arms

My little pet, how foolish you become
    Yesterday's sweet dedications of love
Are part of an infantile dream fading fast
you raise your vampyric eyes to consume my heart
But sense it's been viciously torn apart
You see, a time will fortunately come when you realize
    Our kind cannot stomach "togetherness"
for love is but an arduous game mortals play
So from this day you are mine
    To be my immortal concubine

could some progressive metal be classified as psychedelic as well? i love Tool, they are pretty uniwue but i wouldn't really classify them as psychedelic.
anyway, the only psychedelic metalbands i know are the stoner/doom bands asmodean already named

Hm, I should check that stuff out then. I used to listen to more doom metal than I do now, but it was mostly MDB-inspired death-doom metal and some funeral doom. I still like bands like Novembers Doom, Mourning Beloveth etc, and I mentioned Shape of despair in the main post of course. But not Asmodean's kind of doom, so yeah I should give it a try.

The Ancient song sounds good, I faintly remember not liking them but I don't think I've ever heard Mad grandiose bloodfiends. Those are very good lyrics, especially for Norwegian standards. :p

You really should check out Solefald's album In harmonia universali. It's pure brilliance. Very weird, far transcending black metal's every boundary. Better than any Arcturus, Borknagar or Vintersorg.

Not always. Doom metal doesn't have to be psychedelic at all.

It all depends on the atmosphere and the way the melodies are presented for me.

Electric Wizard rocks by the way, thanks for the tip!

Check Bongzilla - Amerijuanican out as well. I'm not too fond on the vocals, but they know how to play some doom :)

I see a lot of Black Sabbath's work to be psychedelic, as well as the stoner metal which spawned from Sabbath's creations. Of course, ambient black metal is quite psych, and speaking of such, last weekend myself and a friend listened to all 72 minutes of Mistigo Varggoth Darkestra's ambient black metal offering.

I listen way too little Sabbath, should catch up with that. :) Mistigo etc. iI haven't tried out yet. Wasn't it a side project of one of the members of Nokturnal Mortum? I hope it's less upbeat though. NM's catchy folk diddles take out all the fun for me.

Another song that I find great and really works phychedelically for me is Arcana lifeforce mysteria by Dimmu Borgir. Not too tr00 but fuck that. And The wanderer by Emperor.

Ancient is really much cooler than I previously thought. :)

Yeah, everything before Halls of Eternity is great in my opinion. Oh, I was just listening to Ayreon. He has some psychedelic themes in his music too, especially on Into the electric castle and The dream sequencer/Universal migrator. It also has some prog elements though..

Yes, it was a side project.

It certainly is not upbeat, haha, dark ambient parts leading into slow / mid paced heavy as hell black metal parts and then drifting back into ambience.

Sounds good, I'll have to give it a try then.

Damn damn damn, now listening to Lurker of Chalice, a project of Wrest from Leviathan. It's so awesome.

Check out Hellveto if you haven't already. Some of it is trippy as fuck. It is a pagan black metal band out of Poland. His entire catalouge is great.
