Hi I;ve been workign on my quilt SInce tghe day I got home form Bonnaroo adn I finally have the top and back finished.... I have never made a quilt before I did ti all from a book... but now i need help.... How do I sew the top to the batting and teh backing... this si really annoying me... DO I need to like pre quilt with a needle and thread adn then take that out when Im done? Because my piece's keep slipping... thank you so much this quilt will be super cute when Im done and Ill put a picture up.... THANK YOU SOO MUCH~
There are two ways that I handle this problem. One is to place the three layers together, ( quilt top facing up, quilt bottom facing down and batting on top) and pin them in place. Then you sew around the outside edge leaving a small opening to turn the quilt. The other way is to place the three layers together and sew a big X across the middle of the quilt. You can also put the three layers together, (bottom facing down, batting, top facing up.) Either pin it well or sew the big X. The back should be a couple of inches bigger all the way around than the front. Turn this edge to the front and stitch it down. Than quiilt or tie the quilt to hold it all together. Let me know if you need more clarification on this. Kathi
Thank you so much that helped a lot... I used the method of making a big X and that seems to be working... DO you quilt a lot? THis is my first one and it has seemed really difficult... and its killing me that its not perfect... but I guess for a first quilt its ok! Thanks again hun~
this topic is proving useful for me also. dakotas mum, i saw a quilt you made in a thread a while back (a couple of weeks ago i believe) and i was so amazed by it. at the time i was trying to think of something cool i could make for my beau. when i think of quilts, i think of clashing calicos that are harsh on the eyes... i was so mesmorised by the beauty of that gorgeous quilt you produced. so i decided to make him one, a tumbling blocks pattern in dark blay and grey solid shades. its nearly done, and ive only spent 6 days working on it (its a double). im clueless as to how i bind it and add the backing- but i figured since ive got the hardest part nearly over and each triangle matches up perfect, that bit would be a piece of cake
My quilts are never perfect. I make lots of mistakes. But they are full of lots of love. I wish you could really see this last quilt I made. The colors are so spectacular. The pictures just don't do it justice. I made it for my daughter as a wedding gift. All of the fabrics are blue. Most with moons and stars and a silvery thread throughout. I'm glad I could help out. Let me know if you need any other help. Kathi
What a beautiful quilt that is! And yes while my quilt is not perfect i put TONS of love in to it... and time lots and lots of time. I will try to post a picture when its done
yeah, that was the quilt i saw in another thread and i just was blown away by it! i was going to try and do that kind of pattern, but decided i should start simply with tumbling blocks.
This pattern is so easy. The book I used described a way to cut strips sew them together and then cut those pieces into strip and sew them together. You end up with 8 diamonds. Then you sew them together to make the star and then fill in the spaces. The first Lone Star Quilt I made you had to cut out each little diamond shape and then sew the whole thing together. This way is much easier. I don't quilt them when I'm done. I "tie" the quilt together. With each tie you can make a special wish for the person you are making it for. Someday I'd like to actually learn how to quilt. Kathi
