Are there any other students of psychology on this site? Just curious to chat and share ambitions in the field of psychology.
I'm curious as to why people go into psychology to begin with. What are your motives? And if anyone says "to help people" I will scream.
I'm no longer a student, but I don't do anything "in the field" either (had I gone into psychiatry I'd be extremely well off right now... I wound up working in clinical research). I still keep up with what initially interested me, which was personality disorders (initially npd, and later, bpd), as well as all things relating to CBT. I was involved with TARA (http://www.tara4bpd.org/dyn/index.php) for a short period of time, a group that educates and researches treatment for bpd. Lately I've been getting interested in some areas of transpersonal therapy, but that's a little more philosophical than practical.
lol, right on... hahahaha i'm a psych minor... so i'm only taking a few classes that look interesting, like sexuality, drugs and alcohol, abnormal psych, etc. i wanna know how the mind works and how things affect them... it's a fascinating thing.. oh and deadbear, i'm more interested in understanding myself and other ppl than "helping" anybody
I'm into psychology because it's such a wide, interesting field. There is so much we don't know. I'd like to go into research and discover/learn new things and develop ideas. Thanks for everyone's input
its interesting that i see this right now. i just went to college as well, and when i enrolled for classes and what-not i went to major in enterprise management, but now i am highly considering switching my major to psych. everyone yall are saying are the reasons. i like to listen to people, and hear what they have to say... and its a pretty chill job to have. i have a lot of life experiences that i have learned a lot about thinking /the mind. not to mention lots of drugs, and i also went to an therapeutic boarding school so i learned a ton about it then. im not sure what to do. the reasons i was thinking of going into business is because business is just something else that flows with me and something i have always like doing. i really like making money too, and business is all about making money. i just don't know what to do. and i think way to much.
in the US as well... and from what i hear it's really difficult to get into graduate school for psychology. hell in the US you have to have your masters to be a social worker.
i take psyc class, but its required. but if it wasnt i would take it anyways. (im going into animation, why do i need psych? ) i havent had a class yet, but im looking forward to it.
actually a bachelors degree in psych is a VERY good degree to have in the US. It can get you a job in many fields. Much like getting a general business degree. But yes to be a doctor or counselor or something along those lines you need masters, phd. I am not going into that though.
Can any of you guys, in Canada preferably tell me where I would go to start getting some psych. study. Highschools i've been to don't offer anything, and I don't really know if I want to go that way forsure, but im intrested in learning more. I wanna know which colleges offer it. send me a pm or something.
Hmm.... well, I know this will sound hokey to you, but can you just go to a library and look some things up? I would look for books that are easy to read, because psychology can get complicated especially when reading studies and such. I was going to be a psych major, but changed my mind. LOL, I did that like 5 times in college. I really enjoy it, but I don't want to make it my career, so it is more like a hobby. I just like trying to figure out people's motives. If you really break it down and cut out the mumbo jumbo, it is pretty simplistic. Anyway, I'm not sure about colleges up in Canada, but if you are interested in coming to the states, I am pretty sure most universities offer it as a major. As far as finding a job with this degree, I think it could work anywhere really. I mean if you can figure people out, you can almost do anything. That is why they make almost every major take at least one psych class or soc class. It is just important for trying to understand where others are coming from. Granted, jobs with only a BS don't pay as much, but I'm thinking if you go into that field to begin with, your goal is to help people, not help your bank account. I could be wrong, it has happened once before.
I started taking a couple classes this semester and have heard some stories and stuff... My interests are all over the place, but with psych i realized i do want to help people, and not just myself. it's fascinating but can get really sad depending on what we're discussing.
psychology is amusing, intoxicating, and truthful on many occations. I belive it is the 3rd most taken major after, business, and accounting. i've study more and more as time goes by but personally i wouldn't go into the field per say -therapist-, but it's aplicable to any job that is around the living
I have one more GE class to take this semester before I graduate with a BA in Liberal Arts and I currently have a Special Field's Portfolio in Psychology from the CSU system. I am planning on going into the Psy Doctorate joint MFT program at Alliant International in Feb. provided I can raise my GRE score. Right now I am in administration, training and HR for a not for profit but prior to this I directed programs for kids with disabilities and before that worked as a mental health aide in group homes and teen in-patient treatment centers. I miss it but I needed the money so I kinda sold out. After graduate school though I definitley want to practice and get my liscensure from the company I work for now and get out of administration, even though I would make less money as a psychologist than I do now ):
I'm a psych major. I'm actually graduating in January with my Bachelor's in clinical psych. I'm looking into a program that offers a dual degree for clinical psychology & women's studies for when I get my masters & doctorate. It's really hard to get into the psych field without a lot of schooling unfortunately.
