Watch it again and listen to the umm... oh what the devil is it called when there's a voice narrating... oh well ~ If you're having a hard time picking up on what you're 'sposed to get out of the film then watch again and listen to what Kevin Spacey's character says when he's narrating - very beautiful... "It's NEVER too late!!!!". Oh and just out of curiosity what do you all think the rose petals represent??? When i first saw the film i was very enthusiastic so I had to share it with those around me and get their insights. This was one of the questions i found most interesting that i like to ask. Top answers were Freedom, Transformation/New Beginnings and such. Oh and if you watch the extras on the DVD they hasve an alternate ending were the 2 main kids get accused of murdering him ~ Remember they recorded themselves on the 'lil camcording saying the boyfriend was going to kill him...
I was going to watch the movie on TV tonight, but I got side tracked and forgot it was coming on. I guess I'll just have to rent the DVD.
Yes, I think American Beauty is not for eveyone. The first time I watched that film I instantly lked it, but my friends didn't.
no I like this movie, I just don't see a point to it, thats all. What I don't get is why he acts the way he does, what is the reason to fall in love with the little girl, I just don't see the motivation.
ok fine, lust ,but still what was the point of it all, so lust changed him into a lover of life? lust taught him beauty? what is the point!, i just don't get it.
I don't think it has one singular point but if you are focussing on his relationship with the chicky chick, it's more of his obssession with her broke him out of an ordinary life you gotta factor in his daugther's love interest guy inspiring him and him just reaching that breaking point and such too though
there's spoilers in here by the way.... maybe it's about there being more to beauty than just physical attractiveness - To me, a major theme to this movie was that the 'American Dream' can't buy you happiness, that conforming to Hollywood ideals isn't always the way to go. like, mena suvari's character stood for Hollywood's ideal beauty. Kevin Spacey falls in lust with her but that's not going to work out, for him or her. It's symbolic of how Hollywood's shallow beauty aesthetic is ultimately unfulfilling and how a life of trying to achieve status symbols is a life wasted. And it's only after Spacey's character dies and trangresses physical boundaries that he can truly see how much beauty was in his life (and in life generally). I don't know how to say this without rambling (- it's been a long day), but for me the 'beauty' of the title was what you get if you can see through the facade and the polish of the world to the connectedness and the radiant joy of simply being part of life. It's not about the trimmings, it's not about the hot girl, it's about real love, about experiencing feeling, about the beauty inherent in dead birds, plastic bags and the fact that for a fleeting moment you exist.... blah, does this even make sense? i need sleep...
ha yeah, that too - but this movie's like a fricken onion with all its layers and yeah I would definitely class this as comedy. Dark comedy maybe, but that's the best kind.
