the grow guide i've been reading suggests i should add bleach to the water when im trying to get my seeds to open. apparently, it's supposed to prevent fungus from attacking the seeds. is this viable? it doesn't seem right to add bleach to the water.

It is viable, just go by the instructions given. It is only a small amount in a gallon.

Well I really would not worry too much about that but as XT said it is only a few drops. It is more important to have warmth and moisture (not soaking) and pop the beans in the pot promptly when ready.

As BudBill pointed out, heat is the key with germinating seeds and getting seedlings going. There are various methods for germing, ie: plastic bag, str8 to soil,rockwool,soaking,......Which way does the guide suggest?

If you are new at germinating, I might suggest experimenting and trying different methods if possible, to see which one you get dial into.
good luck with all your girls

It's easy. You just need to keep them damp. One mistake people often make is keeping them too warm or placing them near a video monitor.

I use plain white tissue or paper towel in a covered bowl or a baggie. This keeps the folded wet paper moist. Watch the seeds and in 24-72 hours you should see a tail sprout. 80 degrees F is fine as is room temperature or slightly warmer. Plant the sprout soon into some potting soil in a cup at least 6 inches deep. They drop a tap root real quick. I plant when the sprout is about 1/2 an inch long and tip down. BOG

Dont pat down soil on top...just plant it shallow and keep sure its moist perhaps by misting.

I planted them as soon as they sprouted, for the most part. One dropped a tap root about 26 hours after I started them in the paper towel, the rest about 12 hours later. Right now, they've all successfully sprouted from the soil and are now about 4 inches tall.
