Dumunpalit is sold That's a really beautiful looking island. I liked this listing: http://www.privateislandsonline.com/littledeer.htm It's HUGE! over 120 acres! only $550000? For the whole island? If only I'd bought into this capitalist thing long enough... -scott
Yes! I very much like this island. It appeals, very much, especially the wind protection, and rare deer. And the 128 acres!! I also checked out this Palawan island: http://www.privateislandsonline.com/templeisland.htm although as you've pointed out, flatland is not as secure, yet it has resources. I also like the idea of purchasing in the philippines. Life and love
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... this is all wonderful... I have never considered the idea of "buying" an island... I even did not know that was possible!!! me and my best friend have been often thinking to set up one day a healing center for the soul... respecting feng-shui energies and doing meditation and massages... plus othe kind of natural terapies... and imagining all that on a beautiful island... welll.. AWESOME!!!
Yes, I imagine many, most, haven't considered island communal living. Probably because in the back of the mind it just seems too damn good to be true! But thankfully, this is one opportunity we still have. Island- if we set aside the stigmas and cutural associations with that word, and look at the real possibility of life on land surrounded by water, such isolation allows for more freedom than lots land purchased in territories of already established areas. An island allows for our group to be free from interference and supports an environment (physically and spirtually) for LIFE! LIFE AND LOVE!!!
but.. after the dreams.. there are many stuff to consider.. some have already been pointed out.. the most important are connected with the supplying of water and food... if the soil is good.. and for which cultivation.. and how many acres... for how many people... and how far is the first "civilized" land... and electricity..or any other form of usable energy.. ok.. solar energy.. but ..still.. it is not so strong... maybe eolic.. but needs high and not cheap technology... and then.. it dipends also on which kind of community you wanna set up.. i fit is like Blue Lagoon.. just bamboo house and berries and fish... well... dunno if it is possible... I mean,,, I could like it a lot... but I am not sure about an entire life like this... and then... what about travelling? do you intend to stay always in the same few sqare km of land? even with the best company it'll be a bit boring after all... but.. I am curious to know your ideas....
Mountain bicycles would be perfect and building of trails would extend their effective range. A person on a bicycle can go three or four times faster than a pedestrian, but uses five times less energy in the process. For an island with trails a 12 speed bicycle should be enough to get around the island (depending on terrain). To travel on/off the island of a boat would be the only way I can think off. Oh and I like the island idea but I'm poor.
Join the club,,,, no really, that is the point. Fractions always gave me a hard time in algebra but, now here it make sense. As for the actually abc's of the set up, first let me say that I ony put forth the idea and question, and that should the community, rather WHEN the community is evolving it will be the combined efforts of the community as a whole as one, and not one acting as/for a whole. The general concept that I envisioned would included: -one main cabana that acts as the heart -and in the beigning( when still building and devloping) two other cabanas- -later each family (all are family, and each cabana isn't tied by location, or materialistically, to the people house therein) -thereby the houses will serve as shelter (cool ones) - 1-2greenhouse(s), and many gardens, and crops -electricity: I beleive one generator for 'emergencies' is a good idea, and then, we can contract someone else who knows what the hell they are doing, cause I'm no expert! -Bikes-good idea, although I personally believe walking serves well, depending on how large the island is, bikes would defintely be a huge help. -I also thought we could construct a stage for music and dance arts etc. later on after we've finished the intital projects. Face it, we need the beat! _-WATER-_when the time comes, and we've decided on the island, and located the waterways, then we can establish a system. _-FOOD-_aside from the gardens and crops(which should yield since the island purchased wouldn't be selected if the soil was not first tested) there will be the possibility of fish. Though many in the community may choose to refrain, personally I beleive most in self freedom in harmony with a repsect for the freedom of the self within those (evennon-human)around you. _those wishing to eat meats feel free, you may NOT however take the life of the fish or other animal on the island for it's flesh. And here I was going to go into a whole set of 'rules for off island conduct but 1- i'm tired 2- the reasoning behind cummunes is to escape rules- one problem i sure they face 3-i don't want to form a community without the communtiy, but hat is what i've imagined as of yet... good nite sorry for typos, don't take the above terminology set in stone, just brainstorming, can't wait to get feed back, and sleep bye life and love
The energy aspects are really dependent apon the island, and the people( their needs) I don't see what enery will be needed except basic water pumps, ag system> which i'm sure can be worked out by simple means. Boats & travel between mainland/other islands. I think one sturdy main boat, then a small, small motor boat. As far as travel: the only problem I see with individuals traveling to and fro is gas and depending on distance, maintenence. As a community functioning, I think people should be free to come and go as they please. For example, if you are a meat eater and there is a great steakhouse on the mainland-go for it... if gas etc. permit or for me if there is a show on mainland..etc. I'm sure at some point people will want a temp 'vacation'. Tourism->I dunno about that, personally if I paid for my private slice of a community island, I'd want the freedom from tourists observing and criticizing, who wants to establish a place for strutiny? I do realize that the community would need some form of outer income to sustain upkeep, and I'm open for ideas(as always) I thought perhaps the sale of hemp jewlery, tiedye etc. ( all the stereotypical products of a commune that kids would pay out for) And, for those who would agree, if the island was in the right territories legally, and not as a main objective, cannabis could be a personal and financial crop. _But let me now say that this is only a suggestion. NOT the purpose of communal island living, and not an option unless agreed upon by all Again, this is not the main objective of the island community. Also, I thought, that as a 'down the road' idea, we could create an extra cabana/area for bands and respected persons (in the mind of the commune) to escape. As I said, later on when we've established, I believe we should offer our peace to others. life and love
Well shortwave radio (or AM/FM if close enough) could give weather reports. Emergency transmitter incase of a large emergency and the local goverment is needed. For example a person needs to be airlifted to a hospital. Lighting (Safer then kerosine). Flashlights need to be recharged, this will make it easier for people to wonder the island at night to for example look at stars. If your planing a stage, lights for it might be a nice so night shows would be possible. The dock would need lighting if boats are going to dock at night. Everything I listed uses little power. Just an idea of course and would depend on the island. But if a number of small craft are wondering around it may be easier to sell to them then on the main land. That sounds good.
well.. I do not think that such an island should be for an "average" tourist...but for souls like the people that are planning the island... an eco-resort.. you can call it so maybe.. the problem is... when you buy such an island, which are the laws? are all the islands connected with a country? and therefore they have to respect its laws?
Yes I understand that islands fall under the laws of their territories, that is why I included the IF in my suggestion. As far as tourism goes, that is something that is to decided by the others helping to create the community, plus such an option is 'way-down-the-road'. It is nice to imagine the conditons, but until we actually get to it, the abc's and the way it affects other circumstances, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly how things will figure out. My question now is, what kind of atmosphere would you expect/desire in such an island community? life and love
Lets see - an atmosphere that respects the island and everything (including us) on it. Oh and it would be nice if there is low stress and high spirits.
I love your idea, I have ALWAYS wanted to live on an island seperate from society. I can already visualize it. Let me know if you need help with raising money, I would be more than happy to get this idea off the ground in any way I possibly can. I can develop a website for thought outreach / fundraising. I think that if your serious about a project of this scale then its going to take some planning, money, time, and organization. I have serious dedication to the realization of a this dream which I have always thought about but never knew if there was like minded people out there that would want to do this. thanks PS. Do you have a name in mind for the community? Brandon Bochiechio Denver, CO Brandon3140@hotmail.com
Awesome Bochiechio! I will defintiely e-mail you about setting up a site. I wanted to do that but I was't sure how to go about it. I had thought of a name: PALA, after Aldous Huxleys book Island (which should be read But defintely open to ideas! life an love
I would just like to say the island is the very pinacle of an escape from that which is slowly turning this world twards ignorance. I beleive that the entire idea is completely workable. I was actually planning on starting a permaculture based ecovillage in the southern United States, yet if this works out it would be an unbeatably serene place to exist and grow. I however could not vow my full physical support of the project for about another four years, yet in that time I could raise as much financial aid to the project as possible and help in my summers. I will however be permaculture certified and have a major in horticulture science(parents payin for it, lucky me =). I would hope I could send more than 5000$ though. _____________________________________________ I have never belonged wholeheartedly to country or State, to my circle of friends or even to my own family...
