I'm beginning a vow of silence as of November 4. It's mostly to help me understand how LGBTQ people feel when they honestly can't confide in anyone that they're gay. Before I do this though I'm coming out to my school so they know why I'm doing this vow. So far I'm getting a lot of support even though I haven't told that many people yet. However, I know there will be plenty of people hoping I will fail. My vow should last from Nov. 4 until at least April 18 (glsen's national day of silence) but I'm going to try to go for a year. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to pull it off though??? Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, the people who I have told also are talking about possibly planning a walk-out in support of me. It's crazy how many people are on my side. I really think I have something here. So what do you think???

WOW thats a huge step, a 5 month vow of silence. Are you ready for that. To go from pretending to be straight to coming out and shutting up, what will you parents think. (you probably dont care though, rebel rousing teens gotta love em) I think if you could pull it off i would be in awe of you, but i mean you're not even out on myspace yet, maybe you should take it slowly. When you come out people are going to be asking alot of questions, and you wont be able to answer them. And i hope you live in a liberal part of Jersey cause classwork often involves speaking. It wont help you understand how lonely gay people feel, its a good line and i'm sure it will REPRESENT how they feel but it wont really help you understand. Speaking is amazing, a blessing. Words can make all of the difference. You really need to consider what it is you're giving up and how hard it will be. I'm not trying to turn you off to your goal. Just make sure you consider everything before you make what you're doing public. Good luck and godspeed.
    PS-
You're cute and will have fun being a lesbian/bisexual

well i think its an awesome idea & hope ya make it..i've been with 40,000 people all in sillence b4 & its an extremely powerful thing...but thats only like 8 or so hours being able to commit to sillence for months or a year will take serius dedication
    but i'm behind ya

just a question to concider..whats sillence mean to you?
when u say your doing it because ppl feel sillenced..without a voice to express that side of themselves then should that include writting & other non-vocal communications? after all, many in the closset folks may not have told people they know vocaly but i would think that most would have written theyre feelings in journals blogs or forums..
but then you also gotta think about this..your sillence is your voice..your taking a vow of sillence to send a message..& yes its a quite scream..a way to be heard loud & clear...without words.. but its still expressing...

another thing that maybe someone could think about as a way of getting notice on the issue however is another thing me & a freind did (both straight so didnt have the same intention but...) we lived in a closset for a week without comming out for any reason.. we just did it as an experimental thing just to see what it would be like but if it was changed to be more a expression of the trapped..locked in feelings of not being able to freely be open about yourself..as a protest or performance type thing the message would be clear... but i'm just babbling..all i meant to say is good for you...& really hope you get all you want out of the experience..& if u do decide that posting violates the vow by giving you a way to communicate...at least have someone post updates on the effort for you

good luck & i hear your sillent scream loud & clear
