Man, after starting my dreads off with wax a few months ago, I realised what a hideous mistake it was - got the jive out, and started to go totally natural.

Felt and looked OK for a couple of months, but now the dreads are getting really out of control. Most are no longer straight at all - huge loops poking out all over the place, and the frizz factor is insane.

Now, I know that going natural means they're gonna be messy for a while, which I can put up with. But because the're turning into all kinda funky weird loopy shapes, I was thinking they'll always be funky weird loopy shapes, even 5 years down the line. Will that be the case?

Don't get me wrong, I like natural misaligned, unique dreads - but these numbers just look too crazy. Is this process normal, or should I be doing something to make them a bit more even in the long run??

    Much appreciated,

    Riffter

You could palmroll. That could help them straighten out, while retaining some loopiness. But yeah, loops are there to stay.

I'll try to get some photos up soon - my friend's got my camera at the mo'.

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of alot of the loopy numbers - but some of 'em are way out of leftfield man - they're like slaloms!! I think maybe a few of 'em got crazy when I was getting the wax from out of 'em.

Still, I THINK I did the right thing, as the wax was making 'em all totally uniform and dull, and from what I'd read, wax is pretty nasty stuff anyway.

One thing that worry's me a little is that I'm a teacher, and while my present headteacher is cool and liberal, if I ever move schools I'd fail an interview by just being seen if the dreads remain this wild! Schools in England ae generally ultra conservative places, and any form of individuality is frowned upon. It sucks. I s'pose I'd haveta stay at my present school for ever and ever!!

As I told a lot of times before probably, if you don't really like the loops, try out the feltingneedle. But not too much, it will break the hair.

As long as you keep them separate, and maybe do a little palmrolling, the loops and whatnot may very well disappear as the locks tighten. Mine was way loopy and kinky for a while after I let it go, and as they got longet and tighter they became more uniform... :)

it's just part of the process. palmroll if you need to feel like you have some control over how your dreads look, but mostly just ignore them for a few more months and one day you will notice they are looking much better.
