My husband wanted bacon and eggs this morning, so I went to the store to get him some bacon and picked up Amy's Tofu Scramble and some Smart Bacon for myself. The tofu scramble was delicious, I looked it up and found a similar recipe so I can make it home made later, but the Smart Bacon looked, smelled and tasted like a dog treat! You know, beggan strips? Yes I tasted them before so I can confirm that it did indeed taste the same. It's not that big of a deal, I don't need bacon, I barely ate it before, but I would have expected it to taste a little better than that. Anyone have similar experiences with fake meat products?

I always wondered what those beggan stripes tasted like. Maybe their commercial should say "If its good enough for vegetarians, isn't good enough for your dog" lol

I don't expect the fake meats to taste like meats so I enjoy them for what they are, if they taste good. Though all I have really tried are veggie burgers and some mock chicken nuggests which weren't bad.

Fake meat products generally taste like crap. I stopped eating and buying them after a couple of weeks...There are thousands of vegetables, pulses, fruits, and mushrooms out there too experiment with! Go experiment, you'll feel better for it :)

actually saying that I do like my garlic kievs made from vegetable protein! And theres one meat substitute burger from Morrisons that tastes very good on a bbq. So there are a few rare exceptions to the rule!

When it comes down to it I don't know why I tried it anyway, the main reason I gave up meat is because I don't like the taste and texture of it. I think I'll just stick to my portabello "burger". I get the largest portabello mushroom cap I can find and throw it in a pan with olive oil and balsamic vinager and some salt and pepper and cook it until it gets nice and tender. Then I throw it on a bun... used to put some provalone on there, but since I'm trying to stay away from dairy I guess I won't be doing that... anyone know if they make provalone without dairy? If not I can just stick to mayonaise...or nonaise... on that note, what is your favorite "fake" mayonaise product. I have nonaise in my fridge right now, has anyone tried veganaise?

I cut mayonaise out of my diet long before I become veggie, since it is pretty much just fat and cholesterol. So when I switched I never felt the need to try out the vegan mayo since I was use to going without it. I did make my own using tofu one time for some potato salad. It was pretty good for what it was.

    Personally, I think it's disgusting.
I'd rather just have either mustard, or a dry sandwhich.

I LOVE Veganaise. I was a big mayo eatter, and needed to find something to substitute it. I found that veganaise is even yummier than regular mayo. I suggest trying it. I personally, LOVE it. :D

Morningstar's sausages taste a little rubbery (not really a *bad* taste, but a weird texture!), but other than that I've had good experiences with mock meats.

Oh yes, and, just a little warning--don't try and roast morningstar corndogs over a bonfire at the beach! Just...don't!!!

I'm not a big mayo freak, but on certain things I like it. Of course for pasta salad or potato salad and on some of my sandwiches... I havn't eaten mayo for a long time but I bought the nonaise for a recipe I was making. Spinich dip, I used the nonaise and tofutti better than sour cream instead of regular sour cream and mayo. It worked, even my friends liked it. I will have to try the veganaise b/c the only thing with the nonaise is that it smelled a little funny to me. Right now everything is trial and error for me, hence eating stuff that tasted like a dog treat.

I was going to recommend Veganaise for your mayo substitute, but someone beat me to it.

Another fake meat product you might want to check out is Quorn products. I much prefer them over Morning Star or Boca....

Quorn products are soy and GMO free.

Well the outer breaded part started to get charred and black, so I ripped it off and tried to roast just the dog part...bleh! Tastes and smells like burnt rubber!

To each their own, right? What might taste like dog treats to me tastes good to you... I just can't do it.

Oh and I will have to try this TUNO... I don't know what diggity dank is, but I'm willing to bet it has to be a good thing.
