I'd like to use Torpark for anonymous/unrestricted web browsing at school, but unfortunately I don't really know how. When I start it up, it attempts to establish a Tor circuit for 90 seconds before telling me that I need to edit my torrc file if I'm behind a firewall or proxy.

Trouble is, I don't know what to do to the torrc file. Does anyone know how to make this work?

    torrc is as follows:

    Code:
    SocksPort 9050
    ControlPort 9051
    SocksBindAddress 127.0.0.1
    AllowUnverifiedNodes middle,rendezvous
    SafeLogging 1
    ClientOnly 1
    DataDirectory tor\data
    log notice file tor\debug.log

Trouble with using the TOR network and setting up as a server as well as a client is that you then expose your computer, or network, to the outside world with no way of checking beyond the two connections either side of the circuit, where the data is going or where it came from. I dont know if it was "exit" servers the police in Germany recently lifted, but I read somewhere they took away 19 Onion Routing servers as they had routed illegal data of one kind or another. As for Torpark that is a notoriously difficult program to setup and get running. I tried a few weeks ago and last week with no luck. The WWW is full of forums where people are asking the same question "Does torpark work", "can you help etc" personally I think its just not working.
Of course torpark is merely securing the connections and comes supplied with a highly secure and cutdown version of firefox. I will return and get you some more info if necessary
I left a message on the authors (Cult of the dead cow - hactivismo) website http://www.cultdeadcow.com saying it was crap but no-one responded

I use Tor with shorewall firewall and it works great for me.
When you connect to the Tor network it is over a secure connection so I can't see what your point is Columbo
when I used windows I setup torpark it worked well maybe you should join the forum and post your question over there that is what I did.

Point being that the people behind torpark say it would be a great idea if you turned your computer into a tor server. Although on reflection I didnt explain myself very well - I meant that it may be unwise to go the whole way and run a tor server - best to ensure that you are just a terminal client rather than try to make a server just because if you run as a server the authorities seem to take an interest in finding out what computers are connecting to you and if anything dodgy has been going on - you may get your computer lifted by them. Bearing in mind that the TOR project was initiated by the US navy as a way of being able to communicate between two people or networks without either endpoint of the communications
neccessarily knowing where each others terminal is. The Navy apparently still uses this technique for communication and takes an interest in the project I think anyone who thinks these communications are completely secure - completely anonymous, and without issues of security, is not thinking properly - as the German police had no problems finding the servers where illegal images were stored - thats what I meant - if you operate a server it may be used to transport dodgy goods and the circuit can be traced back to you - even though it may take a lot longer to trace the route it can be done. Even though you may have done nothing wrong they have the right to impound your machinery if it was used for illegal web traffic.

I went to the tor forum and itdidnt seem as though anyone was helping just full of people desperate for help. Anyway I will have a look again
Its ironic this thread is here at this time as I had just spent an hour de-stressing after trying to get Torpark to work - I've tried about 150 different things to make it work but it never does.

What happens when you run "Torpark.exe /debugsilent" from the comand line?
maybe you could also try another version of torpark....

just kept searching then it said "its been 90 seconds without a connection "keep trying or terminate?"
so I kept trying and then half hour later I got bored

I am behind a firewall so I took the firewall off and interfaced the computer direct to the network and still the same problem

I havent tried that - I may give torpark another whirl in a few days or so but for now I have a few other projects I must complete -
I will try the debug option and if it doesnt work will look for a different version
