how are hooves vegetarian? Is it because it's not technically flesh? I know that even though I'm not vegan, I don't eat gelatin. It makes me vomit.
There are vegan marshmallows. I have never used them so I don't know how well they do for cooking or how much they resemble other marshmallows.
I know there is a recipe to make your own marshmallows out there somewhere... Let me search... I doubt anyone would make them with gelatin in their own home, nope I was wrong, they do, but here is a vegan marshmallow recipie I found: Vegan Marshmallows 2 1/2 T. vegetable gelatin (Emes Kosher Gel) 1 1/2 C. (355 ml) sugar 1 C. (237 ml) light corn syrup 1/2 C. (118 ml) cold water 1/2 C. (118 ml) water at room temperature 1/4 t. salt 2 T. vanilla extract (or flavoring of your choice) Cornstarch for dusting Combine Gel and 1/2 C. (118 ml) COLD water in the bowl of a mixer with a whisk attachment. Let stand for 1/2 hour. Mix the sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 1/2 C. (118 ml) water in a saucepan. Stir it over low heat until the sugar is dissolved and a syrup has formed. Cook it until firm ball stage (244 degrees Fahrenheit about 120 C. on a candy thermometer.) Remove pan from heat, and slowly and carefully pour the syrup into the gelatin/water mixture in your mixer. Beat the mixture at high speed until thick, white, and tripled in size, approximately 15 minutes. (If you stop before this time, you will have marshmallow creme which you can store in a jar and use like the commercial stuff.) Add the vanilla and beat just long enough to incorporate it. Dust an 8" x 12" (20 cm x 30 cm) glass baking pan with cornstarch. Pour mixture into pan, and dust the top with more cornstarch. Wet your hands and pat the mixture to smooth out the top. Dust again. Let stand overnight to dry out, uncovered. Next morning turn the "marshmallow cake" out onto a board, and cut in into small pieces with a dry, HOT knife. Dust again. Makes about 45 marshmallows.
I recall reading here YEARS ago that the crap in a jar did not have gelatin. Check those labels. and for the recipie above, Eames is usually agar!
My mom is from NJ, so I grew up with the occasional fluffernutter sandwich. I know that the Marshmallow Fluff brand's ingredients are: Corn syrup, sugar syrup, vanilla flavor, and egg white. So yeah, veggie but not vegan. The other brand I know is Kraft's - Corn Syrup, Sugar, Water, Egg Whites, Artificial Flavor, Cream of Tartar, Xanthan Gum, Artificial Color (Contains Blue 1) Again, there's that egg white - so veggie but not vegan. For a crunchy breakfast cereal bar... how about cheerio bars? It's possible to get both vegan marshmallows and vegan fluff from veganstore.co.uk - I've never had either, but they seem quite popular. I've got a funny feeling Eames Kosher Gel isn't vegan. I'm not sure where I've got this from - I'll just go and check up on it.
Nope, I was wrong. It is vegan. The IPBN website (www.plantbased.org) has it listed as follows: Eames KOSHER-JEL. “Contains Fructose, Carageenan, Locust Bean Gum, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor and Color.” From Eames Kosher Products, Lombard, Illinois. I must have been thinking of something else.

Understandably so! If it says 'pareve', then you should be able to be confident that it is. Damn these people.
Just a side note, I read this thread a few days ago and I work at a grocery store so it was simple for me to check. (as i do with much of the stuff i read about in this forum) The stuff in the jar (Jet-Puff) is vegetarian but not vegan. It has egg yolks in it! Don't know if this is redundant or not... but, figured I would let yall know about my findings.
Egg white seems more likely. That seems to be a key ingredient of a lot of them. Either way, it's all eggy nonsense.
